STABLE OF STALLIONS:
The Long and "Shorts" of It

(This column will feature two athletes from each sports team that Xavier has. Hopefully, the school community will get to know more about the Xavier athletes and the various sports they play.)

Volleyball gained a lot of popularity several years ago, when the Philippines hosted a leg in the Women's World Volleyball Grand Prix. Unfortunately, the popularity was limited to the female players, from other countries no less. In Xavier, however, volleyball has always been a popular sport, and the varsity volleyball team is alive and kicking. They train every Monday, Wedneday and Friday, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Get to know two of Xavier's best volleyball players, Lawrence Go (H4F) and Richard Uy (H3B)

1. How did you get started in your sport?

Lawgo (L): I was having a chat with my friends in the IRC. Then, I was invited to try-out.

Richard (R): I first played volleyball, beach volley, during my Christmas vacation on a beach in Palawan . It was fun, so I decided to join the school team after.

2. Given a chance, which famous player from your sport would you want
to play with or against? Why?

L: None.

R: Given the chance, I'd like to play against a team, the Chinese Olympic Team. They're really good, not to mention they won the gold in the Olympics.

3. Among the different school teams you play against, which one do you
find to be your toughest opponent?

L: University of the East. They're really good.

R: The toughest team so far in my 3 years of playing is the La Salle Greenhills Team.

4. After leaving Xavier, do you plan to continue playing this sport,
perhaps in the college varsity level or even professional level? Why?

L: Yes, I'd like to continue the sport to be fit.

R: I would like to pursue a career in volleyball because it takes a long time to learn this skill; provided that I'm tall enough!

5. How do you think the Xavier community can help or support your
     team and your sport?

L: They can help by giving us a permanent training venue and probably delicious food before a tough game.

R: The Xavier community can help by changing their perception of the game and the team. Year in year out, many talented players join the team and Xavier is always considered a threat in tournaments.

6. What makes the Xavier athlete different from other school's atheletes?

L: We're all boys!

R: The Xavier athlete has the brains to help maximize the skill building of a certain sport. They're arrogant enough not to be intimidated by opponents yet humble enough not to be over-confident.
