XAVERIAN'S CORNER

Surviving the Battle, Winning the War   (A Guide on How to Survive Life as a Xavier Student)
Matthew Ang (H4H)

Posted  Wednesday, 20-Oct-2004 10:10 AM

Many people in our society believe that being a student in Xavier School would mean sleepless nights of studying, days of intense pressure, and months of struggle and hardship. However, this is not entirely true because there are some who have found ways to help themselves make life a lot easier as Xavier students.  In fact, all one needs to survive high school life in Xavier is to follow these simple rules or steps. In doing so, one would find out that studying in Xavier is not at all that stressful. It can in fact be fun! So read on and find out how to make life as a Xavier student much more fun and stress-free!

The first thing that a student must do to survive his high school life in Xavier would be to set goals for himself.  Setting goals would serve as a guide to the student when it comes to his decisions and priorities.  The goals that a student would set for himself would also serve as a platform for his growth and development as a young adult.   Therefore, setting goals would be the first thing that a student must do so that he may not only survive Xavier high school, but also so that he may have fun and find meaning in what he is doing.

Besides setting up goals to achieve and live up to, a student must also learn how to work hard.  This is important because it is through working hard that a student is able to surpass the many obstacles that would come his way, and achieve the goals that he set for himself.  Without hard work, the goals that a student would set for himself would never be reached.

Furthermore, in surviving student life in Xavier high, students must always remember that it is very crucial to keep a low profile. In keeping a low profile, one is able to avoid a number of annoying factors that make life difficult for students.   In following this step, a student would be able to work in peace as he would not be noticed by cocky students from the higher year levels or be given a hard time by certain teachers who are very hard to please. Keeping a low profile would truly benefit anyone, even the most friendly and most well-mannered students.   Jesus Christ would attest to that.

Next to keeping a low profile would be for a student to involve himself in the different activities that the school has.  By doing so, one would be able to learn new things and develop into a more complete human being.   This is in fact one of the more fun parts of being a high school student because it also allows the discovery and improvement of a student’s talents and skills. It is not good to be cramped up in one’s room studying for tests all day, or to be stuck in front of the television set all weekend long.  By being involved in the different school activities, one is able to share a part of himself with the rest of the community.

Finally, a student must also be aware of the people around him, especially his friends. As everyone knows, friends play a big part of one’s high school life because they are the ones who influence them the most. Being a high school student, one must always remember to stay around good and decent friends. Through this, a student would be able to grow freely into the young gentleman he is. Also, by having decent friends, one does not need to worry about getting into trouble or being hooked onto vices that cause harm to a person. In a nutshell, having good friends can be a helpful asset for a student who wants to survive because he could stay out of trouble, be a better person, and have people whom he can count on.

These are the five simple steps on how one can go through high school life without much problems.  However, one must also remember that these instructions do not teach students how to survive in Xavier only.  These steps are actually applicable to anyone who wishes to survive and succeed in the outside world .

Matthew Ang is one of the best writers in his class, and this essay is his output for an expository writing activity in his English class handled by Mr. Jake Aragon, who says that Matthew is a very well-rounded individual.  Aside from being an excellent writer, Matthew is also a good violinist and chess player.
