Meet the "Newbies" in Unit 1 & 2
Posted Monday, 06-Sep-2004 9:11 AM
Last school year, the Grade School witnessed an exodus of veteran
teachers. In happy tears, they bid goodbye to friends of many seasons.
In hugs and embraces, they promised to visit and to keep in touch by e-mail
or mobile phone.
This school year, the Grade School welcomed with open arms new teachers,
and eventually new friends, to fill the busy days with jokes, laughter
and good times ahead. Keep scrolling down to meet the newbies
of Unit 1 and Unit 2.

Why teach?
I decided to try teaching because I realized that I feel most alive and enthusiastic when I am dealing with children. I was also looking for a way to give back to the Chinese-Filipino community that I grew up in, and teaching in Xavier was the answer to two of my personal goals.
How long have you been teaching?
This is my first year of teaching children. I have had two years experience teaching adults in the corporate setting and more than one year of experience as a volunteer teacher in several pre-schools and social organizations for the impoverished children.
What do you look forward to in your first year of teaching in Xavier School?
I look forward to experiencing the joys and pains of dealing with children. I am also looking forward to touching lives, helping my students grow and learn. Most of all I am looking forward to learning as much as I can about my students, how to be an effective teacher and how to successfully create quality student experiences in my classroom to inspire a lifelong desire to learn within them.
Given a chance to join a reality show, what would it be and why?
Given the chance, I would join the Amazing Race, because I would like to see how well I can react to the intense pressure of the game. I also want to experience the sights, smells, food, and culture of the different countries.

What made you decide to join Xavier School's teaching force?
I never thought that I would be teaching. At first, I thought I didn't like kids and I attributed this to the little exposure I had with them. But I discovered that the activities I enjoyed most in TRC were the Nursery Admissions, wherein I had encounters with children. I wanted more… more quality encounters in their learning process.
My decision to apply as a teacher was further confirmed after being a club moderator for Grades 5 and 6. That was truly an enlightening experience! In fact, two of my students said, "Cher, bakit hindi ka cher o kaya Guidance Counselor?" In such a short time, I made an impact on my students then. And in that instant, I decided to teach the next school year, no matter what the consequences may be.
What do you look forward in your first year of teaching in Xavier School?
Learning with the kids and being a kid again.
What is your favorite sport and why?
Mountain Climbing. The sport brings to light one's strengths and weaknesses; of life's challenges and God's unending grace. With every trip, a climber comes home renewed and more appreciative of life. In short, pasasalamat ka pa at buhay kang nakauwi.

How long have you been teaching?
I have taught in a small private preschool, handling the 2's and 3's class after I graduated from college. I also handled a toddler's class in a preschool in San Francisco, CA last year. I have had a lot of teaching experience in college because I handled the Saturday Preschool Program of the FLCD academic organization in UP. Aside from this, I also had my practicum in UP and in an orphanage in Quezon City.
Why teach?
Why not? I love kids and I love the idea of imparting to them values and knowledge while they are still young.
What do you look forward to in your first year in Xavier School?
I am looking forward to an active exchange of knowledge, thoughts and experiences with my students and colleagues.
Given a chance to join a reality show, what would it be and why?
If I were to join a reality show, I would join "Starting Over". I would love to be given the chance to reflect on my life -- the things I need to work on; the things I need to appreciate and to look forward to with the company of different women from all walks of life.

Why teach?
I came from a family of teachers. I think growing up in an environment
surrounded by teachers influenced me in becoming a teacher myself.
How long have you been teaching?
I am a fresh graduate and being accepted as a Grade 2 Reading teacher in Xavier is my first teaching experience.
What do you look forward to in your first year of teaching?
I look forward in having more learning experiences and exposed to different principles and techniques that I can apply to be an effective teacher.
What was the last book you have read?
I have last read the book "Empty Chair" by Jeffrey Deaver. The psychological terms and concepts used in the story interested me so much. It gave me so much thrill and excitement to finish the story right away.

Why teach?
Teaching is a very fulfilling job wherein I can maximize the knowledge I have learned by sharing it to others.
What do you look forward to in your first year of teaching in Xavier School?
I expect it to be difficult at times and hopefully, I can cope easily with the help of my superiors. Friends who graduated from this institution said, that the school renders good training to new teachers. The people around are very hospitable and very generous in helping out new comers like me
Given a chance to join a reality show, what would it be and why?
I would join Survivor. I consider myslef adventurous that I would like to try different things. I like the outdoors and I have good navigation skills. I also enjoy working with teams at the same time I would like to learn how to build up my own strategy in surviving a constantly changing environment. Not only the physical environment but also the differences between the people I am competing with.
