LUCEAT LUX
Xavier School recognized two outstanding teachers in the community during the annual Pineau-Clifford Award ceremonies held at the Angelo King Multi-Purpose Hall last April. Mr. Exxon Yu of the High School Social Science Department was named Most Outstanding Rookie Teacher, while Mr. Frederick Perez of the High School English Department was named Most Outstanding Junior Teacher. Here are the citations that Mrs. Jane Natividad, the High School Principal, proudly read to introduce the recIpients of the said awards.
CITATION FOR THE 2004 MOST OUTSTANDING It is said that the measure of one’s success in life is not the amount of material wealth one has amassed; rather, it is the impact one has made on other people’s lives. If this statement is true, then our rookie teacher awardee is, indeed, most successful. Exxon Ryan Yu has all the ingredients leading to success. Every year in his four years of high school here at Xavier, he would consistently earn academic honors and Xavier awards. He went on to study at the Ateneo de Manila where he took a Bachelor of Science degree major in Management. Upon his graduation in 2001, he was accepted by a prestigious bank in its highly competitive fast-track management program. It didn’t take long before he turned his back on what could have been a lucrative career in banking. Apparently, the Xavier awardee in him made him decide to be grateful for the formation he has received. To further bolster his stake in his decision, he took up the necessary education units which enabled him to pass the LET last August 2003. • To his superiors, he is an ideal worker---diligent, dedicated, efficient, articulate and organized---capable of producing quality work even under stressful situations. • To his colleagues, he is an ideal team player who mastered his subject matter and who is most generous in sharing his time and talent in the service of the school and its ideals. • To his students, he bears the torch of Xavier through various roles: as a charismatic Economics teacher, a compassionate ear to those in need, a mobilizer, a leader par excellence who has been organizing and running Days with the Lord, thus inheriting the spiritual stewardship of Fathers Mena and Cortina. • As a role model who happens to be a Xavier alumnus, Exxon serves as a palpable, shining example to our graduates that, like him, they can be grateful for what the school has formed in them by collaborating in the fruition of Xavier School’s mission in whatever way they can. For the success story that he is and has become, the Administration and the Alumni Association of Xavier School are proud to present the Award for The Most Outstanding Rookie Citation for the 2004 Pineau-Clifford Award for Mr. Perez’s proficiency in French is, by the way, only one of the many facets of Eric’s multi-talented self. He is truly a model of self-development, and his desire to continuously improve himself has benefited all those around him. • In the English Department, Eric is the uncontested Mr. Pure Energy. English teachers know that he is the one to run to for ideas on ingenious prelections that will surely be a hit with students. For instance, during the first day of classes, Eric dressed up as a flight steward and told the students that for the school year, he would be directing them on a wonderful journey. Of course, he immediately captured his students’ hearts. • To them, Mr. Perez is the prototype teacher, a brother, a mentor, especially to his fourth year advisees. He has become an anchor that has kept them firmly grounded. Beyond the lessons on the Odyssey, Macbeth, one-act play and grammar, Mr. Perez has taught his students to search from where they are and see their potentials as key to answering a greater call. • Eric has captured the hearts of co-teachers as well. He doesn’t seem to run out of stamina in doing more than his share of tasks, for he still finds time to have fun with colleagues and often lends his ear and gives good advice even in trivial matters. In fact, he even conducts prayer meetings with a group of volunteer teachers. • In spite of already being fully-accomplished, Eric continues to strive for self-development and share his talents with others. Already with an MA in Religious Ed from the Mother of Life Center, Eric is currently pursuing an MA in Language Ed from the University of the Philippines. He also selflessly shares his time wherever his talents are needed. He has served in many school-wide committees, facilitated retreats and recollections in the GS unit, and even written the Filipino translation of the Xavier School Song which is already sung in Grade School. He has also written various articles in various publications and facilitated numerous seminars in Bulacan, Novaliches and the Mountain Province. • More than these accomplishments though, what seems to be most impressive about Eric and what makes him altogether very valuable as a role model is that he makes being good look cool -- something that students remember and something that Mr. Perez exemplifies. For these roles and more that he has fulfilled, the Administration and the Alumni Association of Xavier School are proud to present the Award for The Most Outstanding Junior Teacher
