ALUMNI XS Alumni Meet in NYC
New York City, New York -- After the successful alumni meeting in Vancouver, Fr. Johnny Go (`79) and Hero Yu (`72) flew to New York City to meet with our alumni who are based in the Big Apple. The meeting was held on April 9, Saturday, at Xavier High School at West 16th Street. Unlike the meeting in Vancouver as well as those scheduled in L.A. and San Francisco, this was to be the very first time that the Xaverians in New York would get together, so Fr. Go and Hero were only expecting about five to six alumni to show up. However, to their surprise, thirteen alumni attended the event, more than double their expectation. The most senior alumni were from Class `72 and the most junior from as young as Class `03. The meeting was made even more memorable by the presence of former Xavier teachers, such as Eve Baquirin, Eleanore Estor, Gloria Avena, Hernie Santos, Aida Abundo, and Jules Mercado, among others. As usual, the gathering began with a Eucharistic Celebration presided by Fr. Go. The Mass was followed the School Director's Report, where Fr. Go spoke of the changes in Xavier School and the plans for the Golden Jubilee in 2006, as well as future projects. In his dual capacity as AAXS VP for Special Projects and the Chairman for our Golden Jubilee Committee, Hero followed next, speaking on the school's plans for the 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2006 and encouraging the alumni to organize a New York Chapter of the AAXS. During the Open Forum, the New York-based Xaverians impressed Fr. Go and Hero with their interest in the latest developments and especially with their enthusiasm for the plans for 2006. Souvenirs were raffled off to all those present, and five names were drawn for the Grand Prize of a two-way trip to Manila. Thanks to to the hard work of Calvin Chang (`79), Desi Aldanese (`72), Howard Sio (`79), Beewee Perez (`79), Marco Pineda (`84), Poj Locsin, and Winston Pua ('74). As a fitting culmination, Fr. Go and Hero handed the AAXS New York Chapter banner to Calvin, Desi, Beewee, and Howard to encourage them to continue their efforts in organizing the alumni in the Big Apple. |
