Chris Lowney, author of the groundbreaking book Heroic Leadership, was in Manila for a series of lectures during the week of January 31 to February 6, 2005. Through the initiative of, and in cooperation with Jesuit Communication, Xavier School was privileged to have Dr. Lowney as special guest lecturer last February 2, Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. The convocation-lecture was organized by the Institutional Staff Development of the school and was attended by all Xavier administrators, members of the Xavier Jesuit community, and faculty-staff representatives from the Immaculate Conception Academy headed by Sr. Dina Ang, MIC.

During this special lecture, Dr. Lowney, who was a former Jesuit and a senior executive with J.P. Morgan, discussed the four leadership principles that have guided Jesuit leaders in their diverse pursuits for more than 450 years. These four leadership values, also known as the four core pillars of Ignatian leadership, are the following: Self-awareness, Ingenuity, Love and Heroism. Dr. Lowney discussed how the same principles that inspired sixteenth-century Jesuits can still mold dynamic leaders in the twenty-first century in all walks of life. He revealed also how today's institutions, even corporations, can use Jesuit best practices for effective, whole-person leadership.
