English One-Act Play: Betting on the Script on the 11th Floor
Mark William Uy, H4F

Posted Tuesday, 11-Jan-2005 9:32 PM

Last December 9, 2004 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., the seniors participated in the English One-Act Play held at the Lecture Hall, where each section presented theatrical productions centered on the theme of Chinese-Filipino traditions revolving around a plot patterned after tragedies, the seniors' lesson in the earlier two quarters.

After eight performances focusing on diverse topics, including family, friendship and business, with the use of varying styles of realism and satire, the judges finally awarded the Best Play to High 4B for their musical play entitled Script that depicted a normal school day with five unique students fighting on the contents of a certain script, while High 4E's The 11 th Floor garnered Second Best Play and High 4H's The Bet won Third Best Play.

Other class prizes awarded during the contest included Best Ensemble Acting also awarded to High 4B for the smooth interaction and rapport between characters, Best Production Design, given to High 4F's Pohan's Whispers for their realistic Quiapo set and Best Script, which went to High 4D's Building A Boat for their poetic lines.

Individual awards include the Best Actor award, which was awarded to Sean Su, who acted as himself in the winning play while Eduardo Firmalo, who played an elevator operator in The 11 th Floor , won Best Supporting Actor.

Coming from different theatrical and literary background, the judges were Mr. Yan Yuzon, from the Tanghalang Ateneo and a member of The Mongols, Ms. Grace Agcoali, from the Xavier athletics department and a member of the PETA productions, Ms. Donna Lampa from the English department and Stallion Moderator and Ms. Luisa Relatado, a former English department chairperson. Using the following criteria for judging: relevance to the theme, creativity and originality, acting and directing and application of the elements of a play, each with 25%, the judges had a difficult time in choosing the winners.

Prior to the play, each class was divided into groups of four to create individual stories, from which each class chose a script to be revised, developed, enacted and produced, and was then given most of the English periods during the quarter to prepare for the said presentation that accounted for 20% of the seniors' grades.
