Teachers on the Go at the Field

Can you imagine teachers having fun under the sun on a school day when they are supposed to be checking papers or preparing their lessons? Some students may have the idea that teachers don’t know how to have fun or they're the people who suck the life of everything that is fun. Last January 12, their teachers proved them wrong. Teachers from different grade levels and different departments went to the field to play softball against 6G, the champions in the softball intrams.Teachers and students were very excited about the even. It is very rare that you see teachers going against students in any particular field.

It was a time to get out of work, relax and have fun. The teachers prepared by practicing a day before from 4-6 pm in the field. Mr. Leonor gave his time to teach the teachers everything about softball, from the mechanics of the game up to the actual game itself. He was very patient with them, especially since most of them had no experience in playing such a game. He was a good teacher because his students (co-teachers actually) easily understood everything they had to do for the next day. Cramming up a quarter’s lesson into a two hour learning experience. Wow! Can you beat that?

Just hours before the game, the students were bugging their teachers to join. They had no idea who among the teachers was going to play. At 3 pm, the teachers started going down to the field, both excited and nervous but ready with their sporty outfits. They somehow felt excited to get out of the 4 walls of the classroom for a much needed break, but really nervous about being the laughing stock of the students.

Well, eventually all the hard work and worrying paid off. With all the cheering and jumping, the teachers won the first game against the champions 6G with a whooping 6 point lead. On the second game, the students showed their learned skill in softball, coming out with a 6 point win. The teachers lost in the second game against the all stars of the grade 6 level.

Everyone went home happy and satisfied. The teachers went back to their workrooms talking non stop about their experience on how the students cheered them on during the game. Through this experience teachers saw the essence of being a community. It was a time to interact with the students and to play just for the sake of having fun.

This is a very memorable experience for a first year teacher like me. I realized that we, as teachers, don’t only exist inside the classroom. We can alos make a difference by playing and having good clean fun with our students. The students enjoyed the experience because they saw the lighter side of their teachers and they appreciated their teachers more.

We are very proud in having these gentlemen in Xavier as our students. I personally thank Mr. Leonor for giving his time to such a worthwhile activity as this. We hope for more fun filled activities like this.
