Youth Once United
(YOU), Rule!

“The
youth of today holds the future”, sounds familiar? Many successful people
have used this quote in their speeches, from heroes and leaders, to our
teachers in school. Although some people may say this simple quotation
is all too common, we can say that it is not a cliché. The future truly
rests on the children and today’s youth. That is why, the youth must prepare
themselves for the real world that lies ahead.
Who are the youth? They are who many people call “teens” or adolescents.
They’re the children who will grow up to become like the famous leaders
and role models we look up to. Who knows? Maybe the student you see going
to school could be a future political leader. Or the classmate you seat
beside with may become a great doctor or a successful businessman. Even
president of this country!
To assist the youth understand their purpose, the first ever Youth Once
United Rule(s) Convention was held at the Ateneo de Manila Grade School
last January 15, 2005, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eight different schools
participated in this worthwhile event namely: Ateneo Grade School, Assumption
Antipolo, Claret School, La Salle Greenhills, Miriam College, St. Bridget’s
School, St. Paul and Xavier School. Delegates from the different schools
came together, all excited to meet new friends and learn new things. They
were given the opportunity to select their own workshops, each with different
topics but all with one common goal-that accomplishment of goals can be
attained when the youth of today work together for the benefit of all.
The convention started with a meaningful prayer which was followed by
the welcome remarks of Mr. Salvador, the Assistant Headmaster of the Ateneo
de Manila Grade School. This gave the delegates a good idea of what the
convention is all about. Next, they were asked to proceed to their chosen
workshops. They were given 12 different workshops to choose from.
As one of the delegates, I decided to choose the workshop on Music Influence.
Our facilitator used motivating ways of teaching. He allowed us listen
to music and shared his life as a child to us. This helped us relate quickly
to the topic. From him I learned that if we’re influential and inspiring,
we will be empowered to accomplish goals. Thinking about it, if everyone
in the school helps each other prepare for the school fair, the job would
be easier and more fun!
After lunch, the delegates had their plenary session where in Mr. Salvador
gave a speech that enlightened everyone at how important the role of the
youth is in this world. Delegates were asked to give their own feedback
on what they’ve learned and what they can apply in real life.
Finally, when all the activities were finished, the most anticipated part
of the event began. All the delegates got to their seats as the variety
show started. Each school presented a special number; some presented dances;
sang songs and even played different kinds of instruments to make music.
The performers displayed their talents, showed their uniqueness and rocked
on the audience. Awards were given to best performers, most entertaining
performance and more. It was cool!
After all the fun and excitement, it was time to go. Everyone said their
goodbyes to their new friends with the hope of meeting them again. I’m
happy to have participated in this convention. If ever I get another chance
to join this event, I’d gladly do it again because it is a once in a lifetime
opportunity. This convention taught me many new values. It showed me new
ways of improving my life.
Everyone has a special talent, in sports, in music, in academics. Whatever
is your talent, be an empowered youth to help others. Remember, Youth,
Once United, RULE!
