ANTI-GAMBLING 101 FOR PARENTS

Posted
Thursday, 12-May-2005 11:20 AM

With the NBA playoffs currently in full swing, Xavier School is reprinting below some tips to help parents detect and prevent online/cellphone gambling among our children:

1. increasing cell phone bill (infotext)
2. text message that states the name of a team (for odds or winning team
betting), or the word "high" or "low" (for high/low betting).  Bookies usually text the bettors an hour and half before each game.
- 7 to 9 pm for NBA
- 3 to 4 pm for PBA
3. increased deposit or withdrawal from bank accounts
4. sudden loss or gain of money
5. frequent use of internet: access to sites for odds and other info
6. mysterious phone calls: use of coded "gambling language"
7. unusual, deep and overreaction to result of games
8. loss of jewelry, watches, cell phones
9. purchase of new and expensive things
10. borrowing money from family members and friends
11. stealing, fighting, threatening
12. influence of relatives (siblings, cousins) who are involved in gambling

Let us do our part to protect our children from this menace.
