Xavier Basketball Teams Sustain Momentum

     The Xavier basketball teams continue to lead the charge in this school year’s sports season by clearing their initial assignments in the Milo SBP – Passerelle and the Philippine Athletic Youth Association(PAYA) Basketball Tournaments.

     Our SBP Team registered their third win in three games blasting La Salle Antipolo 50 – 08 last July 30. This team is poised to finish the group stage on top after besting St. Mary’s College and Marist School in their previous outings. Already qualified for the quarter-final round, Xavier only needs to hurdle Notre Dame of Greater Manila on August 20 to finish the eliminations with an immaculate record.

     The Xavier Passerelle Team, on the other hand, shocked defending champion, La Salle Greenhills, when Ian Umali(H2E) sank his lone basket of the game with four seconds left in the final period. The Xavier side exploded in celebration when everybody realized that Ian has sealed the win. The scoreboard showed 37 – 35 when the final buzzer sounded. The win boosted the Xavier Passerelle Team to high spirits which needs only to clear La Salle Antipolo come August 13 to finish on top of their group with a 3 – 0 Win – Loss record.

     The PAYA season opened last July 22 in the renovated Xavier High School Gym. As bright as the new face of the gym, our PAYA Juniors and Midgets Basketball Teams kicked off with convincing victories in the first two weekends of the tournament. The Xavier Midgets Team dominated both Lourdes School of Quezon City, 72 – 48 and Southridge School, 73 – 31. The Xavier Juniors Team meanwhile, lorded over their counterparts whipping Southridge School, 90 – 47 and Lourdes School of Quezon City, 77 – 56. Both teams will be playing six more schools in the elimination round. The top four schools in both divisions will advance to the semis.
