XAVERIAN'S
CORNER Mathirang Mathibay Ms. Grace Manatad, HS Mathematics Team Coach Posted Wednesday, 13-Dec-2006 12:37 PM
Xavier School once again establishes its presence as a tough contender in mathematics contests by snatching the title “Mathibay” in the Mathirang Mathibay 2006 contest sponsored by the UP Math Majors’ Circle and held last November 22, 2006 at the UP campus. The team hailed as Mathibay was composed of Ivan Kenneth Wang of H4B, Jason Tan of H4D and Mark Benedict Tan of H3C, with their alternate, Bernard Bryan Kee of H4B.
“Mathibay” corresponds to third place, but the team is proud to have snatched the coveted title from unrelenting science high school teams which previously dominated the contest’s main spots.
The contest began with over 80 teams from about 45 schools, with Xavier School sending two. The other team was composed of Andrew Vincent Yap of H3C, Thompson Christian Tang of H4D, Gabriel Ruaro of H4A and their alternate, Jordan Russel Tee of H4B. The big number of participating teams was trimmed by several tough elimination rounds, which both of our teams survived to belong to the top 12.
The first, second and third places remained unclaimed even after a grueling final round, forcing all 6 finalists to outdo each other by sudden-death. The 6 finalists were Quezon City Science High School , Philippine Science High School (two teams), Chiang Kai Chek High School (two teams) and Xavier School . When Chang Kai Chek claimed the Pinakamathibay and Mas Mathibay titles, Xavier School was left to contend with the science high schools for the remaining title, but the defending teams proved to be no match to the prowess of Wang and the two Tans.
The team brought home medals, certificates, a trophy, a cash prize and more grit to dominate the math contests scene. Luceat Lux!
