Alumni Recollection in SFO

Fr. Ari Dy

The Xavier Alumni RecolleXSion was held at the University of San Francisco (USF) on Sunday, July 23rd,   with Fr. Ari Dy, SJ ’89 as recollection master.  Cleve Yu ’76 and Scott Tan ’00 did a magnificent job of gathering about 25 people, including a few ICAns, to attend the recollection.  The group included:

Arnold Tan ’66; Cris Ibarra ’71; Cleve Yu and wife Helen, Benedict Say, Philip Madera with wife Elisa, and Alex Pang of ’76; Edward Te ’78; Leland Castro and Michael Sy of ’89; Mark Cokee ’95; Michael Lo ’96; Earl Qua ’98; BJ Charles Ang and Justin Liu of ’99; Scott Tan and Anton Dy Buncio of ’00;   From ICA there were Leah Lua ’99 and Tanya Tan ’03.

Bryan Hontiveros ’99, Adrian Tan ’01, and ICAns Gretchen Chua ’00 and Claudine Chan ’01 dropped by for a short while.

With its theme of “Journeys of Our Lives,” the recollection followed the basic format of the other alumni recollections with the “Roadmap” activity being a significant experience.  A unique aspect of the San Francisco recollection was the short visit to USF’s Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History.  Dr. Xiaoxin Wu, Director of the Institute, oriented the group about the insitute’s research work on the relationship of East and West through the lens of Christian missionaries in China.  Many in the group were fascinated to learn about Xu Guangqi (Kuangchi), whose portrait hangs in the institute together with those of Jesuit missionaries Matteo Ricci, Ferdinand Verbiest, and Adam Schall.  Like many Xaverians, they thought Kuangchi was St. Francis Xavier’s Chinese name, but Kuangchi is actually another person, a Chinese imperial official who became a Catholic.  Xavier School’s Chinese name is in honor of this eminent Chinese Catholic.

Confessions and Mass were held at the Loyola House Jesuit Community Chapel at USF, thanks to the hospitality of the Jesuit community there.  Fr. Dan Kendall, SJ, helped Fr. Ari hear confessions.  University President Fr. Steve Privett, SJ, also granted a 50% discount in the facilities rental.
