Xavier Volleyball Team - Solid!

“Xavier… SOLID!” This is the cheer of the Xavier volleyball team and this is exactly what their performance is like: solid.

Last November 10, 2006, the Xavier volleyball team faced Philippine Institute of Quezon City (PIQC) in the Filipino-Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation (FCAAF) Volleyball Tournament held at the Xavier HS gym. Playing on their home court, the Xavier volleyball players knew that their school’s pride was on the line. Thus, they put up quite a show for their home crowd and walked away with the victory to the delight of the overwhelming number of students and faculty who watched the game, but to the dismay of the PIQC supporters.

Both teams played furiously at the beginning of the first set, but as the game progressed, the Xavier boys found their rhythm and started to pull away thanks to the unstoppable quick spikes of Leonard Loo (H4A) and the powerful attacks of Audren Wong (H3C). Of course none of these would have been possible if it weren’t for the precise setting of Kyle Ong (H3H). As the first set went to a close, the PIQC team decided to have one final push, but the superb blocking of team captain, Kirby Cheng (H4C) was just too much for them to handle as he did not allow any single spike to get through. The first set ended at 25 to 17, in favor of the Xavier team.

Unlike the first set, the second set started out differently. The Xavier team quickly gained a twelve-to-nothing lead courtesy of the series of consistent service from Jordan Tee (H4B). It was then that the Xavier team understood that the boys from PIQC had given up. However, the Stallion Spikers didn’t just simply relax as they continued their tight defense and accurate offense. Moreover, with his forceful spikes coming from Julio Inocencio (H4B) PIQC team's chance to catch up was utterly thwarted. The second set ended at 25 to 10.

By the third set, the morale of the PIQC volleyball team was completely crushed and the Xavier boys showed no mercy as they battered the opponent with more attacks. They had an early lead thanks to mighty spikes of Tee and Cheng. Despite the big lead they had, Angelo Santos (H3G), the team libero, sacrificed his own body as he made a fantastic dive to keep the ball alive. The third set quickly ended at 25 to 11.

These boys truly had the hearts of champions and they have what it takes to reach the top. If they continue to play with the solid performance that they showed in this game, then they will be a truly insurmountable team.

With this victory in their last game in the Fil-Chi elimination round, the team is now qualified to play in the semifinal round that starts this week.   Let us continue to support our volleyball players as they play in the Fil-Chi Tournament. Luceat Lux!
