HIGHLIGHTS
Remember. Celebrate. Discover. Last Saturday, November 11, 2006, the Xavier Alumni from batches 1990 to 2006 attended “Thank God It’s Xavier” (TGIX), a recollection held at the newly renovated High School Chapel. To start off the recollection, the alumni were asked to walk around the Xavier grounds to reflect and reminisce on their Xavier School days. Being a fresh graduate, I vividly remembered the times I played “cops and robbers” in the quadrangle and the days I played marbles on the marble tables during my grade school days.
Moreover, it wasn’t hard to remember my fulfilling and joyful moments of high school – the wonderful moments laughing with my classmates, the stressful cramming for our research papers, the enlightening insights After seeing all the newly renovated places and our old hangouts, the group shared insights with each other. After a very productive discussion, we headed off to lunch at the teachers’ canteen. It was the first time in my life to have “bonding moments” with other alumni, old and young, through conversations about college life or the most common of all, jokes about life. Within that short span of time, I was able to meet a lot of my fellow alumni from different batches.
Together with my new and old friends, we headed back to the chapel to listen to speakers share their outlook on how valuable the Xavier education is to them. One of them was Fred Yang (XS ’01), who shared how his Xavier education helped him in the spiritual and community aspect of his life. Fred’s speech was followed by a sharing from Harvey Keh (XS ’96), head of Pathways to Higher Education. Harvey What better way to end the recollection but with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, which was presided by Fr. Johnny Go S.J. (XS ’79), school director and fellow alumnus. Although short as it seemed, one whole day of reflection, celebration and discovery of our selves and of being a Xaverian was all very fulfilling. As Harvey mentioned in his speech, “We are part of the exception, not the rule.” With that, we are privileged to be Xaverians, men for others and beacons of light. The event would not be possible without the planning of several alumni such as Jun Lim (’90), Glenn Konghun (’93), TJ Agulto (’99), Kevin Syling (’03), Chico Locsin (’05) and TJ Simeon (’06).
(The next alumni recollection is scheduled on Dec. 9 (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM) for Batch 1960 -1989. Contact Fred Tiu at ftiu@xs.edu.ph for more details.)
