It’s a Bug’s Day for the Nursery AM!

Every year, fellowships are held to foster interaction and exchange of ideas in a fun activity among parents, children and other members in the nursery level. This year, the challenge was to make the first family event of the Nursery AM classes, not only enjoyable, but enriching and memorable as well. The red-letter day was on October 7, 2006 at the Fr. Rafael Cortina S.J. Sports Center which started promptly at 8 o’clock in the morning.

For the impressionable first-time big-schoolers, themes that they can relate to yet still learn more about are environmental awareness and animals.  And while they are naturally drawn to these breathing and moving creatures, some remain strange and unfamiliar, thus “It’s a Bug’s Day!” evolved out of the desire to show the kids that bugs are more than just creepy crawlies and that in their own small ways, they can help save our environment through recycling.

Each class was represented by a bug. So the ant, butterfly, caterpillar, dragonfly, bee, fly and cricket came alive through the children’s headgears, artworks, class banners and exhibits with the latter as the most unique and crowd-drawing part of the morning’s event. The creative use of recyclable materials were evident in all these activities such that the kids came to appreciate what recycling can do while they were able to have a first hand encounter with the live bugs.  To everyone’s delight, the ants marched animatedly through the anthill, the butterflies gracefully fluttered, the caterpillars crawled hungrily and the crickets chirped and hopped excitedly.

Several games were eagerly participated by father and son and mother and son tandems, as well as family and class teams. Everybody was in high spirits as they wiggled and connected like caterpillars, hurdled the obstacle course while segregating recyclable materials for proper disposal, tested their agility and hand-eye coordination as they built and dismantled towers of plastic cups and paired matching bugs on paper.

The nursery AM boys came in color coded shirts as well as a lot of parents, too. Each class sang, recited or cheered on stage to everyone’s pleasure. The camera clicks and video cam shooting were unstoppable. Without doubt, this was a special moment that just had to be captured!

The kids buzzed with excitement throughout the activities including the awarding of game prizes and loot bags, the raffle draws, and the special awards received by each class for Early Bird, Most Attended Class, Best Banner, Best Performance, Best Exhibit, Spic n’ Span, Best in Teamwork, Best in Sportsmanship, Most Disciplined and Best in Spirit.

“It’s a Bug’s Day!” was truly a fellowship in action. As an XSPA-initiated activity, headed by Ramon Sy who gave the welcome message, it was supported by the faculty and staff, whose presence was led by Mrs. Arlene Choo, Asst. Principal for the Early Education Unit and Ms. Mina Bona, Nursery Coordinator. And most of all, as Wilson Sy, Nursery AM Level Representative, said: “this event would not have been possible and successful without the cooperation, enthusiasm and wholehearted support and participation of all nursery parents and teachers.” Indeed, teamwork and shared spirit go a long way!
