XSPB PARENTS' FORUM

Nuggets For The Family

Cherrie Pie Ner, parent

Husband-and-wife speakers, James and Marilou Tan, spent a morning of warm sharing with the Xavier parents last September 13, 2006.  Held at the Xavier School Multi-Purpose Hall, the topic for the day was on COMMUNICATION.

Here are the most significant learnings gained from the sharing:

  • Family is a system. If one member changes, the other members will change.
  • Invest time in your family.
  • What we learn from our parents is usually what we pass on to our children.
  • Life for children is worth living if life for parents is worth living, too.
  • The tongue of the wise brings healing. Words can build relationships.

        Too many can destroy it.

  • To encourage a person to do better, use the power of “I” than “you.” For example: It’s better to say, “I was hurt” instead of “You hurt me!”

“I” is relating to the person’s feeling and “You” is a signal of blaming a person.

  • Blaming is a coping mechanism. Do not blame a person in resolving a situation or a problem.  Blamers become powerless.
  • Empathy is a necessary tool for good communication.  Empathy is putting oneself in a situation before he or she says anything or reacts about something.
  • Communication is important in the family. Communication is key to a harmonious relationship in the family.
