HIGHLIGHTS

Angelicum College Visits Xavier High
Mrs. Julie Cruz, HS Science Department Chairperson

Posted Saturday, 21-Oct-2006 9:29 AM

Last October 9, 2006, Monday, 15 teachers from Angelicum College (AC) visited Xavier School.

They were met by Mrs. Jane Cacacho, HS Principal, Ms. Aimee Apolinario, HS Assistant Principal for Academics, and some Science teachers led by Mrs. Julie Cruz, HS Science Department chairperson.

The AC faculty and staff were mainly concerned about Xavier’s Science program so the HS Principal’s office and the Science Department arranged a schedule to enable the visitors to observe Science classes.

Moreover, they also had the chance to look at the distinctive features of Xavier High’s Science laboratories. Mr. Mel Chua and Mr. Eugene Quijano showed them around Xavier’s facilities.

During the articulation among the teachers, it was noted that Xavier and Angelicum have different approaches to education since the latter follows a non-graded approach, which is very similar to Xavier’s Individualized Instruction. However, despite the difference, AC’s learning facilitators said they need exposure to the methodologies and strategies used in ‘big group’ discussions.

AC teachers, headed by their Science Department OIC, Ms. Maria Urduja Concepcion, were able to observe H1 to H4 Science classes.

Another interesting thing noted was the difference between the two schools' advanced classes. In Angelicum, being advanced means covering the modules at a faster pace and all students take the same tests. Unlike In Xavier, where the advanced program is different from the regular class and advanced class students have a different test from the regular students.

Furthermore, the features of Xavier’s laboratories and equipment, as well as the delivery of lab services were also talking points in the discussion.

When all was said and done, the visit proved to be fruitful and enriching for everyone. It ended with AC teachers promising to return the favor by inviting XS teachers to their school.
