HIGHLIGHTS

Camp Read – a – Book

Mylene Maog and Carmel Villanueva, Grade 1 Teachers

Last October 9 – 13, the Grade One boys celebrated Literacy Week through various fun-filled activities.

To start the festive week of celebration, the boys, together with their Reading Teachers, trooped to the Book Fair sponsored by Scholastic Publishing House. The boys enjoyed browsing through hundreds of titles as they filled out wish lists. These wish lists were shown to their parents who supported them in adding new books to their personal collections.

To better appreciate the people who work hard in spreading literacy, the boys had an Interaction with an Illustrator.  Mr. Mark Santos, who is a member of Ilustrador ng Kabataan, and is also a member of the Xavier School community, was invited to share his talent in illustrating for children’s literature. He showed the boys some of his previous works which include a recently published book, entitled Hale Hale Hoy. The boys enjoyed watching Mr. Santos draw fascinating characters as he talked about the power of one’s imagination and creativity in drawing.

To highlight this year’s theme, Camp –Read – a – Book, the boys sported caps and neckerchiefs and buttons like campers. They gathered in circles and took turns in playing giant board games and in sharing book reviews. The boys made these book reviews with the help of their parents.  They also answered word games, word hunts, mazes and riddles. During DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) Time, the boys quietly read their favorite books which they rated in their Reading Record Page Charts.  To experience what illustrators and authors do, the boys had a chance to create and illustrate their own story.

Teachers and students alike really enjoyed this year’s Literacy Week.  Through these activities, the boys realized the importance of reading and the joy it brings!
