HIGHLIGHTS

The New Kabsulong

Ria Marifosque, Grade 6 Teacher

October 14, 2006 saw a new Kabsulong for the Grade 3 boys.  Entitled “Camp Read-a-Book,” this year’s Kabsulong was an integration of old Kabsulong activities and new storytelling sessions.  Planned especially by the SAP and the Grade School English Department for the boys, the Kab Scouts were taken to four different “base camps” around school where they heard various stories and were given the chance to improve and test their physical, mental, interpersonal, artistic and culinary skills.  If they perform well in each base, they get medals (individual achievement) and awards (group achievement) that they attach to their flags.

The stories they heard and the activities they had all fell under four main themes: Duty to God, Duty to Country, Duty to Others and Duty to Self.  The previous Kabsulong activities were modified to suit the value-laden stories to be told in each base.  Treasure-hunting tested their observant skills in Base 1 while the game Kadang-Kadang tested their endurance, patience, and teamwork in Base 2.  Being resourceful was the theme for Base 3 where they listened to a story about making “soup from stone” and cooked actual soup themselves.  In the last base, the boys challenged themselves with the Tangrams activity wherein characters in the story were replicated through the big, colorful Chinese puzzle pieces.

After all the fun stories and activities, the boys had one last activity – the main event.  The boys gathered in the quadrangle where their bonfire was lit ceremoniously with the fire literally dropping from the sky!  Scout Masters Mr. Marc Magsalin and Mr. Giovanni Ortiz hosted the bonfire event wherein the students gave their best in yelling their section’s special cheer which featured the different forms of literature in Filipino, like pabula, alamat, anekdota, kuwento, sanaysay, nobela, tula, parabula at dula.   They also introduced Ate Cha and Kuya Bong of the Alitaptap group of storytellers who gave the students one last story before sending them home for the night.

The integration with the English Department proved to be a success.  The Grade 3 students went home happy with awards, new patches, and most importantly, new values and skills that they can take with them in life.
