ALUMNI Young Guns Astound Veterans Posted Wednesday, 04-Oct-2006 3:24 PM
The 1st Legacy Challenge last September 18, 2006, was all it was cracked up to be. The best Xavier bowlers from all generations showed up to play and it was clear that it would not just be for a friendly match. Right from the beginning, all teams were looking to win, and at the end of the day, it would be the youngest decade winning it all.
Led by SEA Games gold medalist, Markwin Tee, team 2000s/Varsity was a house on fire in the beginning as they took the 1st place points in each of the three events of the first set, including a singles victory by Tee. It was not a one man show in any way though, as all members of the team, including varsity members J. Em Ang, Carl Lim and Timothy Hung, all contributed wins in different events to help the champions wrap up the tournament even before the last event was played. All in all, team 2000s/varsity took 1st place points in six events.
There were trouble spots for the team, however, when team 90s closed in with a string of 1st place finishes during the second and third sets starting with the trios. Then, the duo of Vinson Tan and John Co (’97) bowled over its opponents and set up the stage for Xavier Bowling Team Coach Sharwin Tee (’96) in the Singles. Coach Tee scorched the opposition with an impressive 254, the highest game of the tournament, to take yet another 1st place finish for team 90s.
The fiery comeback was doused, though, as team 2000s/varsity took home two more first place finishes in the singles, courtesy of Timothy Ocampo-Tan (’06) and in the doubles with Kevin Chua (’06) and Carl Lim.
With the Legacy Cup just a breath away, team 2000s/varsity took 2nd place honors in the baker’s team event led by Edmund Lee (’06) and Claudio Yao (’02) to formalize their win.
Team 90s, thought to be the weakest team with only seven members surprised everyone with a second place finish. They took a total of four 1 st place finishes. Meanwhile, team 80s hung around with consistent play from Ferdie Co (’85), Edgar Gatchalian and Bonner Dytoc (’86), but they couldn’t get over the hump, as they only took one first place finish in the baker’s team event. They finished third overall.
Team 60s/70s also made a small comeback in the middle sets courtesy of Maning Uychiaco (’75) and Edison Go, but suffered from the absence of its best players.
Overall, the event was a complete success, with all bowlers expressing their approval of the event. Meanwhile, others were already looking forward to retribution next year. With the event’s success, they almost certainly will get their chance.
