Dengue Advisory

Posted Monday, 09-Oct-2006 8:08 AM

In response to concerns on Dengue, Xavier School invited local city officials to inspect and evaluate the school’s overall heath and sanitation systems and facilities and, in particular, those that pertain directly to the prevention of dengue.  Last Tuesday, October 3, Dr. Chito Olano, Municipal Health Officer for District II, together with Mr. Ferdie Timbol and Mr. Raymond Balubar (Sanitation Officers) met with school authorities to review existing health protocols and to discuss how to further improve the school’s sanitation procedures to safeguard against infectious diseases, particularly the threat of dengue which is prevalent during the rainy season.

The city officials toured the school and inspected sensitive areas on campus, including possible breeding grounds like drainages and roof and ground-level canals. They expressed satisfaction with the school’s general cleanliness and the practices in place to maintain clean and healthy environs. They suggested that as an enhancement, the school should consider planting more “neem” trees where possible, as natural mosquito repellants.

They also expressed gratitude for Xavier’s proactive efforts in coordinating with the local government on health and security issues and gave reassurance that the creek near Xavier School is not a major threat since it has flowing water, is not a catch basin for stagnant water, and therefore not a primary breeding ground for dengue-spreading mosquitoes.

Furthermore, please note that the following preventive measures are currently being implemented by the school:

  1. Chemical misting of open drainage around the school campus
  2. Fumigation (on a regular basis)
  3. Environmental sanitation (i.e. regular cleaning of the school premises including regular disinfection of all surrounding facilities)

While we are confident that Xavier School remains clean and safe, we are nevertheless issuing the attached health advisory on dengue to better protect the Xavier Community against the risk of contracting the disease.
