Know Your Teachers: New Faces

Matthew Tan (6E) and Aris Amor(6H)

Posted Saturday, 23-Sep-2006 7:39 AM

Have you ever gotten to know the new faces around Xavier?

We have… and we want you to meet them. We’ve asked them

a few questions and got some pretty interesting answers…

We’ve interviewed the following new teachers:

  • Ms. Azalea Florentino, Grade 5 English, Class Adviser 5B
  • Mrs. Lee Ann Lai, Grade 5 Filipino, Class Adviser 5G
  • Ms. Andrea Aniban, Grade 3 English
  • Mr. Randolph Amurao, Grade 6 Guidance Counselor
  • Mr. Anthony Yu, Grade 4 Science
  • Ms. Jeanette Angeles, Grade 2 Math
  • Ms. Sharlene Tansiongkun, Grade 2 Chinese
  • Ms. Celestine Tan, Grade 3 Guidance Counselor
  • Ms. Angela Del Rosario, Grade 1 English, Social Studies, Filipino
  • Ms. Rizza Ribo, Grade 4 Social Studies, X-Rep Moderator

How is it like being a new teacher at Xavier?

  • Ms. Florentino

It’s fun. The students here are very obedient, the teachers are very

friendly, and the environment is very good for learning.

  • Mrs. Lai

I am very privileged to be part of the Xavier Faculty because

applying in Xavier is like crossing a very thin line (It’s hard to get in).

  • Ms. Aniban

It is fun, as of now. I get joy from my work. My co-teachers are

very warm, as well as the students

  • Mr. Amurao

So far it’s been good. I’ve enjoyed my stay here.

  • Mr. Yu

Challenging and at the same time, it’s fun.

  • Ms. Angeles

For me it’s really fulfilling to be a teacher, especially since I’m

teaching Grade 2 students, because they’re very lovable and

it’s fun to teach them.

  • Ms. Tansiongkun

It’s hard because I came in at the middle of the First Quarter.

Therefore, the students are already tired/confused since

I’m their nth Chinese Teacher for this year. On the other hand,

it’s very fulfilling.

  • Ms. Tan

Well… So far, it’s a good experience because the work is fulfilling.

The work not only allows you to help the students, but also their

parents. It also helps that my co-workers are supportive.

  • Ms. Del Rosario

It’s okay. It’s quite hard because there are a lot of things to do.

At the same time, it’s fun because I’m teaching little boys.

  • Ms. Ribo

It’s pretty challenging and exciting at the same time. What else?

Basically that’s it, I’m excited

Why did you pick Xavier?

  • Ms. Florentino

I chose Xavier because I heard the students are smart.

  • Mrs. Lai

I am very privileged to be part of the Xavier Faculty because

applying in Xavier is like crossing a very thin line (It’s hard to get in).

  • Ms. Aniban

First of all, I wanted to teach an all-boys school. And I believe that

Xavier is one of the best schools in the country. And I chose English

as my subject because it was my major in college and I loved the

subject since I was in Grade School.

  • Mr. Amurao

Because some of the counselors here are my friends, and they

tried to convince me to work here. I said yes, of course!

  • Mr. Yu

Because I’m an alumnus here, and I want to share what Xavier

has given me.

  • Ms. Angeles

Xavier is one of the best schools I know because of the

good quality education.

  • Ms. Tansiongkun

Actually, I was texted to come to Xavier to apply since the original

teacher already resigned to go back to China. So I gave it a try,

and… Here I am, I got accepted.

  • Ms. Tan

The guidance program of Xavier is different from other schools;

It is more student-oriented, and that you are given plenty of

opportunity to help the students.

  • Ms. Del Rosario

Actually, I just tried here. And I feel lucky because I got

accepted, especially since it’s my first job.

  • Ms. Ribo

First of all, I wanted to try something new. It is my first time to

teach older kids, because I’m used to teaching preschool, Monte

Montessori, and Trumpets Children’s Theater.

Is it difficult teaching at Xavier?

  • Ms. Florentino

No. The students are very loving.

  • Mrs. Lai

Yes, it may be hard sometimes, but there are fruitful things I am

acquiring in teaching here, like a helpful experience and wonderful

students and teachers.

  • Ms. Aniban

Not really. It’s really fun teaching at Xavier.

  • Mr. Amurao

No. Because the students and teachers are easy to get along with.

  • Mr. Yu

No.

  • Ms. Angeles

Not really. It depends on how you budget your time.

  • Ms. Tansiongkun

No. Because if your passion is for teaching, then whichever school

will not be difficult.

  • Ms. Tan

The work has its own challenges, but I would say that I’m able to

cope/adjust with the work well especially with the help of my

co-teachers.

  • Ms. Del Rosario

The Filipino subject only, because it’s hard for them to understand

some things.

  • Ms. Ribo

Partly yes, because I’m still adjusting to a new school. And also

because teaching 230 kids is hard for me.

Does anything bother you about Xavier?

  • Ms. Florentino

None

  • Mrs. Lai

No. None at all.

  • Ms. Aniban

No. Nothing at all

  • Mr. Amurao

Since I’m new, I haven’t memorized the procedures and forms etc.

  • Mr. Yu

The only thing that bothers me are the changes in Xavier during

my time as compared to the present.

  • Ms. Angeles

Nothing.

  • Ms. Tansiongkun

The only thing that bothers me is that the Chinese time is limited.

  • Ms. Tan

Well I have to say that, because I’m a new teacher, I’m still

familiarizing myself with how it’s at here at Xavier… So I’m

not in the position to point out what could be improved on.

  • Ms. Del Rosario

None at all

  • Ms. Ribo

No. Not really. Although, of course I’m still adjusting but it’s pretty

manageable.

So that was first sitting of getting to know new people, go

ahead, don’t be shy… They want to be your friends too.
