COMMUNITIES
If you happen to be along Roxas Boulevard last week, you won’t say that only a handful finds fun in reading. From August 30 – September 3, 2006, thousands of book lovers, educators, students, and school administrators from all over the Philippines crowded the World Trade Center in Pasay City for the annual International Book Fair.
Among the many visitors of the fair were the High School Middle Level Administrators (MLAs) and teachers, who have generously given their time to hunt books and other materials for the High School Learning Resource Center (HS-LRC).
As early as ten o’clock last Wednesday, August 30, 2006,
during the Pinaglabanan holiday, I was already at the World Trade Center
to witness the opening of the Book Fair. However, to my dismay, the Book
Fair did not open as scheduled. It was good David Pomeranz
After another half hour of waiting, the Book Fair finally opened. Shortly after that, I was joined by Ms. Joney Pusta, the HS-Guidance Coordinator, who immediately and excitedly burrowed through the stalls of the fair.
Shortly before lunch, Mrs. Thess Ladrido, head of the English Department, along with English teachers, Mr. Christian Bumatayo, Ms. Donna Lampa, Mr. Jake Aragon, Mr. EJ Legaspi and Mr. James Nicolay, also joined us as we continued to search relevant books and AV materials for our needs.
Likewise, Ms. Rosie Moscoso, head of the Math Department, arrived early that afternoon and participated in selecting books for the academic and formation needs of our students.
Day One of the Book Fair flew so quickly, but the HS MLAs hunt for books has just begun.
Saturday, September 2, 2006, Ms. Aimee Apolinario, HS-Assistant
Principal for Academics, went to the Book Fair to select more relevant
LRC resources. She was joined by Mrs. Ladrido
On the last day of the Book Fair, Sunday, Mr. Ang went back to the book fair for more book selection. He was then joined by Filipino teachers, Mrs. Fides Ylan and Mr. Boom Enriquez. The three of them devoted themselves with books from local publishers and they ended the day with bags of books for the school and for themselves.
It was evident from those who have gone to the Book Fair, that they all enjoyed the activity. Ms. Moscoso, for instance, was particularly happy to see Math books that present very interesting and creative activities that maybe used in the classroom. Mrs. Ladrido was not only excited about the updated materials for English that she got for the HS-LRC but she was also thrilled about the many children’s books for her son.
Apart from the Book Fair, the HS-LRC also exerts great effort at updating it Chinese Collection. Thus, Mrs. Yolly Reyes, head of the Chinese Department and Sr. Lourdina Lanying, Chinese Librarian, went to Binondo last Tuesday, August 29, 2006 to select Chinese books and AV materials.
The HS-LRC hopes that with the additional books and AV resources, students and other members of the community will be more encouraged to maximize the existing LRC resources.
I can already see the students queue in front of the HS-LRC and the teachers flock in the Teachers’ Collection Section when these new materials are actually purchased and made available for circulation. That’s my idea of fun!
