XS Spikers' Saga

Back-to-Back

The Xavier School spikers have another achievement to be proud of. For the first time in its volleyball history, the XS volleyball team won back-to-back championships in the Fil-Chi League after defeating the team of Hope Christian High School 3 sets to 1.

As predicted, the feeling during the championship game was surreal. The whole gym was anxious to see the highly anticipated championship game between Xavier School and Hope Christian High School . Both teams were anxious to play as they were warming up well before their usual times.

The game began with much energy as players from both teams were diving for the ball. Both teams also executed their plays very well and halfway through the set, both teams were almost even from every aspect. Luckily for Xavier School , they met a couple of lucky breaks and took the first set 25-21.

The second set proved to be a different story as Hope Christian High School played with a more sense of urgency and took advantage of their speed to step up both their defense and offense to hold of Xavier School to win the set 25-21.

The third set looked to turn out the same way the second set did as Hope Christian High School lead early in the set. However, a timeout and a few stops later, Xavier School found its rhythm and executed their plays well behind the spikes of Audren Wong, Jordan Tee, Julio Inocencio and Leonard Loo to win the set 25-18.

Luckily for Xavier School , they caught Hope off guard and capitalized on it as they went ahead for an early lead and never looked back. Pretty soon, the look of defeat was already in the opponents’ eyes and Xavier School capitalized on it to win the championship 25-9 as they made history to win the titles two consecutive years in Xavier School history. Congratulations to our Xavier School Volleyball team!

Another Chance

After missing the playoffs last year, the Xavier Volleyball Team had another chance to go for the gold as they faced Lourdes School of Quezon City during the semifinal round of the PAYA tournament.

This wasn’t the first time that these teams faced each other and it was fortunate that the Xavier Volleyball Team still remembered their opponents’ style. This helped them to get the early advantage and win the first set. However, it was slightly different in the second set as the teams fought neck to neck the entire set but Xavier still managed to win the set and take a commanding 2-0 lead.

In the third set, Xavier made sure that LSQC would not have a fighting chance as they took an early advantage and never looked back. The win marks the third time the Xavier Volleyball Team has reached the finals in as many tournaments.

Late in February, the team faced the team from La Salle Greenhills in the PAYA volleyball finals. The first set easily went to the green shirts, but the Xavier team stepped up in the second set. However, the strong offense of the opponents enable them to bag that set as well.

Down with 2 sets to nothing, the blue and gold spikers did not easily lose hope. They made sure that they wouldn’t let LSGH go home with the victory that easily. The XS team impressed their challengers with their solid blocks that enabled them to give Xavier a fighting chance by getting the 3rd set.

The 4th set proved to be the most heart-stopping but heart-breaking set of all. Xavier managed to reach the 24 th mark with LSGH lagging behind at 18. However, the team seemed to have collapsed in defense and the LSGH green shirts were able to pose a rally that eventually led them to win the 4th and final set of the game.

Nevertheless, it has been a good season for the team. It has only been the 2nd time that Xavier ever gotten into the PAYA volleyball finals – the first being in 2005.
