The citation that follows was read by Ms. Aimee Apolinario, High School Assistant Principal for Academics during the High School Graduation Ceremonies Last March 24, 2007.

      For the first time in its history, xavier school will honor its outstanding athletes through the Rafael Cortina Exemplary Athlete Award.

      The late Fr. Rafael Cortina, S.J. once wrote: “it is my ardent wish that through sports* our boys will learn to work as a team, overcoming selfishness, to sacrifice themselves for the common good and to be friends with everybody…I hope they become persevering in adversity and humble in success.”

      This award is bestowed upon a graduating student who exemplifies outstanding performance and exemplary character in his sport and has moreover shown competence in his studies. More specifically, this award recognizes an athlete who embodies the ideals of a Xaverian - passionate, hardworking and consistent in his effort to hone and improve his skill and to encourage others in pursuit of athletic goals. Moreover, he shows humility in triumph and grace in defeat.

      The awardee has exhibited leadership in his team and in the community – by the way he plays and by the way he conducts himself, thus leading others to live out the values of xavier school on and off the playing field. He is a man of conscience, fair at play, and mindful that he is not only representing himself and his team, but also the entire Xavier School community.

      The Rafael Cortina Exemplary Athlete Award is envisioned as an award for only one exceptional athlete from every graduating class. This golden jubilee year, however, Xavier School has found not one but four such deserving individuals. We are proud to confer the award on them.
