Hudson – Batch ’02 Takes AAXS Bowling Title Jim See, AAXS Bowling Club President
They took the long route, but Batch ’02 didn’t mind at all. Batch 2002, led by SEA Games Gold Medallist Markwin Tee, endured through three tough matches to take its first AAXS Annual Bowling League Gold Division Championship, while batch ’77-’78 powered its way to win the Blue Division Title. Batch ’02, sponsored by Hudson Floor Varnish, first faced 6th seed Batch ’73 in the quarterfinals. While ’02 was heavily-favored to advance, team ’73 banked on big games from George Buenconsejo (233), and import John Co (210) to keep the game close. In the end, 200 games from brothers Markwin (225) and Sharwin Tee (229) kept the team’s head above water, defeating ’73, (879 to 869). In the semi-finals, team ’02 faced defending Gold Division Champions Batch ’82. The battle was another close one, with batch ’82 anchor Johnson Cheng and Gabriel Kho bowling 235 and 230, respectively. Batch ’02 drew big games anew from the Tee brothers (210 and 238), but it was the big games of Paul Cheah (227) and team captain Claudio Yao (226) that made the difference. Hudson – ‘02 won via score of 901 to 859. The championship match was one of the most exciting and highest-scoring matches in league history. Top seed Batch ’99, who knocked off Batch ’86 in the semi-finals (857 to 773), was a marginal favorite by virtue of their consistent play in the past weeks, and they did everything to support that belief. The team of Charles Tee (233), Lawrence Lee (208), Kendrick Yu (259) and Brian Kelly Chua (227) all bowled big games, ending with a total series of 927 (231.57 average). The night, however, belonged to batch ’02. Cheah (250), Yao (212) and Sharwin Tee (222) all bowled well, but the highlight of the night was Markwin Tee’s game. The younger Tee showed he deserved his High Average Award as he bowled 10 strikes in a row to finish with a 289, the highest game in a finals event. They ended the night with a flourish, a series total of 973 (243.35 average). The finals victory capped a team-oriented performance, where a different bowler stepped up each playing day of the 12 week tournament, including reserves Roger Py, Jr. and import Timothy Hung of the Varsity Team. Meanwhile, the blue division was not lacking in drama either. Batch ’77-’78, which was barely able to form a team in time for the tournament, bowled well enough in the wild card round, barely nosing out Batch 60’s/70. Then, the team drew big games from Juanito Ng (217) and import Vinson Tan (257) to defeat top seed and favorite, Batch ’05-06 via scores of 885 to 846. Batch ’05-06 was led by Rookie of the Year Edmund Lee’s 226 and import John Zamora’s 236. All in all, it was by far one of the most exciting annual leagues in the bowling club’s history and the board of directors couldn’t be any happier. Last May 2, 2007, the AAXS Bowling Club went back into action with its Xavier-ICA Mixed League at the E-Lanes Bowling Center. This year, the league is open to everyone in the Xavier community, including parents and faulty and staff. For inquiries, please contact Jim See at or Vinson Tan at 0920 9476906 or 0916 4889824.
