Dr. Edward S. Wang '75 : Exemplary Alumni Awardee Acceptance Speech

Posted Thursday, 31-May-2007 8:20 AM

Delivered by , Dr. Edward S. Wang '75 at the Angelo King Multi-purpose Hall, on the Occasion of the Awarding Ceremonies for the Xavier School Golden Jubilee Awards for Exemplary Alumni.

Acceptance speech for Exemplary Alumni Award March 3 2007

I would like to thank XS, the Board of Trustees and the organizers of the Jubilee Year Celebration for this immense honor.

This recognition is really a tribute to my Xavier teachers, mentors, and friends whose lives of service continue to touch me even today: like Fr. Barbero…in my mind I relive the image of a stocky Spanish priest carrying a stepladder all by himself along Padre Faura St. from Robinsons all the way to the PGH Chaplain’s Hall…like the MOL sisters, our lay Religion teachers now patients who continue their evangelical work despite their arthritic knees…Amb Bienvenido Tan who ordered BookMark to publish my book on Bone Tumors (Sir, I don’t see how BookMark can possibly earn from a book like mine but thank you very much)…the batch 72 alumni who have poured their heart and soul into the PGH Fund for Charity patients…my batchmates Greg Yu and Mr. French Baker Johnlu Koa whose support for Xavier leave me speechless—truly you deserve this award more than I do except I think they gave it to me because I’m poorer.

This award is also a testament to my mom who sacrificed so much to give my brother and me our Jesuit education. I would also like to recognize my wife Aileen, who given a choice I’m sure would have preferred to be at a conference abroad but she’s here instead; my daughter Mariel who is looking ever so pretty this evening. Finally, I would have wanted to share this precious moment with my son Mark, but I am obviously no match to a pretty date at his sophomore nite.

This honor is truly humbling. I hope I can live up to it.

Luceat Lux!
