The awardees gave thanks to their alma mater and shared their reflections on a life lived in service. Reprinted here are the full text of the response of John Burtkenley Ong, Dr. Edward Wang, Eng. Wellington Ong and a message from the son of the late Atty. William Chua, Derek Chua batch 2000.

John Burtkenley T. Ong '86

I felt like a soldier at the battle front and this mission could not have been accomplished without the support of so many people. It was a clear day when our small boat left the pier. I looked up the sky and felt, “Today, good will overcome evil.”

Dr. Edward S. Wang '75

This recognition is really a tribute to my Xavier teachers, mentors, and friends whose lives of service continue to touch me even today: like Fr. Barbero…in my mind I relive the image of a stocky Spanish priest carrying a stepladder all by himself along Padre Faura St. from Robinsons all the way to the PGH Chaplain’s Hall.

Atty. William T. Chua '72 by son Derek Chua batch 2000

Being a Xavierian myself, I have also come to realize that the foundations for what my dad accomplished in life were laid out here. I have always been proud of being an alumnus of this school, but this award for Papa makes me even prouder.

Wellington Y. Tong '66

I received the gifts of life and critical sustenance through my parents. They taught me the meaning of love, integrity, and commitment through the way they lived. Living simply and frugally, my parents provided their five children a home, security, and a good education as our gateway to the future. This was perhaps why all four boys went to Xavier.
