  XAVERIAN'S CORNER

Purpose Driven VolumED

      4000 People. 12 Bands. 8 Schools. 4 Dance Troupes. 2 Hosts. 1 Goal.

Today’s youth is all up for partying, whether it be a birthday bash or the junior prom, Xaverians just love to celebrate in the ecstasy of music and dance, more so when celebrating for a righteous cause.

In line with the ignited passion to make a difference, XS, in collaboration with RockEd Philippines, jived last February 9, 2007 at the GS Quadrangle in celebration of its first ever advocacy concert titled VolumED . Bands, such as Kamikazee, Urbandub, Spongecola, Rivermaya, Sandwich and Kjwan, turned up the volume and hyped up the crowd in anticipation for a night of fun, entertainment and above all, education.

Impacting the World

Celebrating its Golden Jubilee, Xavier truly made history by gathering schools, students and strangers for one very special cause: The improvement of public school education in the country. The pressure was on for the Voice of the Youth Concert (VoYC) Committee, bands, models, and hosts to make the variety show not just any other Xavier event, but rather, a night that would impact the youth into taking action for the betterment of society.

Finding Meaning in One Night

Undeniably, most, if not all of those affiliated with VolumED, went all-out to deliver what they had promised, going beyond all expectations to make the concert both unforgettable and momentous for the audience and the school.

Laurence Go of H4B, the variety show head, recalls, "Planning the event was very challenging and entailed many sacrifices but planning the event with the whole VoYC Committee made it all worth it for me."

The commitment and enthusiasm shown by the VoYC proves that purpose in one’s endeavors changes everything. It gives people the inspiration and focus needed to a leap of faith for something as worthy.

Purpose Affects Performance

In an interview with Francis M., he shares that he wants his 8 children to grow up in a world free from today’s obscurity. Thus, he is active in advocacy concerts such as this where he was an instrument of change through his talent in music.

Much like Francis M., Kjwan, one of the pro-bands, pointed out that the advocacy concert is their way of helping out and that "it (playing) would be different." Also, they say that there is a different high when they jam for a reason such as this.

Aside from the bands, the dance troupes that were invited to join the festivities also feel that their performance that night was totally different compared to previous ones. Ayna Salazar, President of the ICA Dance Troupe, explains that their performance is better because they are driven by a purpose.

Indubitably, despite the controversies surrounding this truly unprecedented Xavier concert, Xavier heralds a new wave of rock, dance and fashion, pumping up the volume of the oft-neglected voices in the Philippines.
