XAVERIAN'S CORNER

When we think about a Xaverian, we usually tend to exchange personal perceptions with reality. Naturally, school pride gets the better of us and we turn blind eyes to most of our quirks. People unassociated with Xavier School, though, would typically dismiss our proclamations as false. Recently, however, a new development may be the key in order to prove to nonbelievers just how well-rounded we are. Through last December's Talent Drive, we confidently showed the world one of the marks of true Xaverians: young men inclined to share their God-given talents to the less fortunate.

According to Talent Drive Head Filbert Tiu, the Talent Drive – named Kiko’s Dream Academy – is “an outreach activity which allows the members of the whole High School community to not only share their talents with the less fortunate, but also hone them as each learns from the other”.

The concept of organizing an event that would teach less fortunate children sprung from the popular summer program made club, Para Kay Kiko, which continues to bring out the spirit of charity among many Xaverians.

According to Filbert, he was given the idea of a talent drive and was tasked to build on that. He then thought of having student-volunteers use their talents in teaching kids in the community.  Eventually, what started out as a vague idea became Kiko’s Dream Academy, and is continuing to evolve into something bigger and better than ever before.

The Xaverians' inclination to serve brought many students to volunteer for this event where they facilitated specific clinics that taught public school children things that they would not normally learn inside the classroom like basketball, volleyball, creative writing and Ultimate Frisbee to name a few.

The future truly is looking bright for Kiko’s Dream Academy, and with the help of the Xavier High School community this academy is hoped to live on for many years to come.
