The Choices We Make

Closing remarks delivered during the launch of the Xavier Award to the Grades 5-7 students last January 10, 2007, at the Fr. Rafael Cortina Sports Center.

Good morning, fellow Xaverians.  First of all, let me say that I cherish this opportunity to address you on this the occasion of the launch of the Xavier Award.  The Xavier Award is something that should be the aspiration of every real Xaverian.  Everyday, you and I are faced with choices.  Some of them are simple but some of them can be quite tough.   Let me give you a few examples:

     1.  It’s already 6am and I slept late last night.  Do I say  “Let me sleep longer.  Anyway it’s okay to be late today because it’s just Alay Buhat or service and there is no grade for it.”

     2.  Should I do my homework or just enjoy and play the new computer game I bought last weekend?  Anyway, I can always copy the homework of my classmates tomorrow morning.

     3.  I did not study for my test and I am sure my parents will get angry if I fail.  Do I just cheat?

     4.  I spent the whole evening watching my favorite television show and I am already so sleepy.  Should I just skip my evening prayer tonight?

     5.  I missed the honor roll last quarter and will no longer be eligible for an annual award.  Should I still strive to do my best in the succeeding quarters?

At this point, let me warn you that, as you grow older, the situations will become even more challenging.  So, how would you choose when faced with the above situations?  It is no secret that the true Xaverian will choose to follow the 6 C’s.  Furthermore, one tip I can give you is to pray and to think of what our Brother Jesus would do.  Thus, let the 6 C’s be your guide, prayer your weapon and our Brother Jesus, your inspiration.

The Xavier Award is a challenge to each and every Xaverian to do his best.  I hope each one of us, you and I, can live up to the challenge of being a man for others endowed with a passion for justice and the skills for development.  Thank you for listening.
