How does one end a year meaningfully? How does one successfully intertwine an ending into a new beginning? To make death bloom into life, to dangerously tread the line between passing and rebirth: how does one make an ending seem like a joyful occasion?

As another year draws to a close, XS celebrated its annual Christmas program last December 15, 2006 at the HS Gym. Every year, more and more surprises are prepared for all the students to enjoy before heading off to their anticipated Christmas break. This year’s program included various events such as the awarding ceremonies of the senior’s One-Act Play and the much anticipated MRX.

Beginning with a simple but profound Eucharistic celebration headed by the School Director, Fr. Johnny Go, it boasted off a full chorus side by side with a touch of the contemporary: an electric guitar.

Despite this eclectic fusion, a prayerful mood was maintained, as the students were eager to hear another meaningful homily from Fr. Johnny Go

After the inspiring homily and a harmonious choral, the mass ended with much gaiety.

But that was just the tip of the iceberg. After the Eucharistic celebration came the most anticipated MRX or Most Requested in Xavier. A faux American Idol, with the students as both judges and voters, and teachers as contestants who sing and dance, definitely created happiness for a cause: The Xavier School Educational Trust Fund.

This year’s MRX used the popular Disney teen movie, High School Musical as their backbone for their performances.

Mr. Adrian Asis of the English Department and Ms. Cathy Ching of the Chinese Department were the first pair to perform. They blew the audience away with their ensemble performance of the song “Start of Something New.”

Mr. Dindo Munsayac and Ms. Joanne Natonton of the Science and Social Science departments respectively, had the audience going wild as they sang the song “Bop to the Top” with utmost pride and determination.

As they say, it isn’t over until the top MRX(s) sings. Ms. Barbs Magallona of the English department who was also evidently voted as this year’s #1 MRX was up next together with her partner Mr. Mendoza of the Social Science department treated the whole high school to an entertaining rendition of “Breaking Free” coupled with a pseudo high school jock meets cheerleader.

Before presenting, Ms. Magallona and Mr. Mendoza were asked if they were nervous. Ms. Magallona frankly replied that she didn’t feel anything and was ready for what they had to perform while Mr. Mendoza honestly claimed that he was nervous indeed but was also quite ready for their performance.

The finale for this year’s Christmas program featured a presentation by the ten MRX winners who sang and danced “We’re All in This Together” with complete passion and all-around emotions.

Students cheered wildly, contented spiritually, musically and emotionally with the overall outcome of the whole Christmas program.

As an intermission to the songfest, the winners of the High 4 One Act Play contest were announced. 4D took home the bronze with their play influenced by Greek-drama entitled “Five People You Meet in Hell.” 4H, on the other hand, grabbed second place with their innovative play known as “Kubeta,” and of course, last but not least, 4G nabbed first place with their simple yet profound play, “ Lead Me.”

When the whole student body united in singing the school anthem, one cannot help but feel how joyful the occasion was. Despite it signaling the end of another year, classmates, hand in hand singing and making this ending seem more of a rebirth, capped the year meaningfully with much hope and anticipation for the future.
