Narra Trees Bloom Again in Xavier

Posted Wednesday, 28-Mar-2007 2:34 PM

As I was walking down to the Sports Center from the high school campus, a faint familiar fragrance suddenly wafted through the breeze. ‘The narra trees are blooming again’, I thought, ‘another season is here’.

It was then that I realized that in all my busyness this Golden Jubilee year, I had failed to observe the passing of the seasons, but here it is – Mother Nature had tickled my nose to remind me to stop and smell the flowers.

I had always wanted to share about the hidden nature of the Xavier campus - its plants and birds, but never got around to writing about it. But now, suddenly the fragrance of the narra blossoms urges me to write now - because the narra blooms just once a year and the fragile flowers are gone in a few days.

Throughout the school year, we hurry and scurry about, like ants on top of a hill, doing our tasks effectively and efficiently. We meet, put our heads together, plan and construct this addition and that. We take care of our young, nurse their light and share our light with each other and with those outside.

In the midst of our concerns, let us pause to enjoy and give thanks for this spot on earth that has been given us. Walk under the trees and enjoy their shade. Stop and enjoy the smell of the kalachuchi trees.

It’s almost time for the school bell to ring and I hurriedly try to think of a concluding thought to end this article. But outside I hear the birds call and see them wing their way through the branches. And here it is again, that faint fragrance of narra blossoms wafting through the air.

I cannot find that concluding sentence and so I just urge you – go out and let us enjoy Nature’s hidden, simple riches in our campus.
