This trip made me realize that nothing is an accident. St. Francis Xavier may not have been able to succeed in fulfilling his dream of evangelizing China during his lifetime, but his efforts and the incredible power of his intentions have reverberated across time and space. Those who strove to bring his dream into fruition managed to bring Christ to Philippine shores, which is home to many overseas Chinese. They brought Christ to us; they brought Him to our children. Moreover, many of the Chinoy converts are eventually bringing the faith back home to China, together with all the Chinese and non-Chinese Jesuits who follow the mission of those who Arturo Dy XS'75

“The shangchuan pilgrimage was spiritually refreshing and exciting. The wholehearted participation of all the pilgrims, their quiet and solemn observance of the rituals and their care and concern for each other created a unique and memorable experience. Emma and I are very happy that we were given the opportunity and privilege to join this pilgrimage. Sincerely, Amb. Bienvenido A. Tan, Jr. Shangchuan Pilgrimage Reflection: The Shangchuan pilgrimage was personally very meaningful. It is one thing toread about the life of St. Francis Xavier or to look at images of him. Itis definitely another to go to the place where he died. I was most inspiredby the few minutes I spent at the garden beside his memorial which overlooksthe sea. Being right there and experiencing the place took me to anotherhigh. I was also very touched to see so many of us, representing thedifferent sectors of the Xavier community, come together for this trip. Itruly enjoyed the place, the food, the weather, the friendship &camaraderie. Most specially, the pilgrimage reminded me about our role incontinuing the legacy left by our patron, St. Francis Xavier. The pilgrimage to St. Francis Xavier’s shrine made us realize the passion and determination of St. Francis to go to China. Even to this day, Shangchuan Island is such a remote, quiet place, a mere dot in the mainland map, but its significance to the Catholics in Asia cannot be overlooked. What one man dreamed of centuries ago is fulfilled today through the zeal and dedication of the Jesuits to pursue St. Francis’ mission. Xavier School is part of their legacy. We are very fortunate and truly privileged to have undertaken this spiritual journey. Benedict and Leticia Chua
