SC President's Outgoing Speech
Jonn Dy, High School Student Council President

Posted Friday, 09-Mar-2007 2:33 PM

This is the outgoing speech delivered by Jonn Dy, Student Council President, last March 6, 2007 at the High School general assembly.

Good Morning! It’s funny how this time last year, I was standing in front of you guys, ripping my own poster in the miting de avance. It was at this time last year when you gave me the chance to serve you. Cliché as it may sound, time flies so fast, and it’s almost the end of the year. The seniors are counting the last days they’ll spend here in Xavier. The juniors, sophomores and freshmen have their own countdown to summer break. But before we make all these countdowns, it’s only fitting to look at the year that has transpired before us.

It wasn’t a perfect year. It wasn’t the best for some, but I guess the imperfections, the hardships, and the challenges made the success, the results and the triumphs much more memorable for each and every one of us. Who would’ve thought that the year was going to be this way? I guess the SC owes it all to you for without your support and help, the year wouldn’t be as unforgettable as it is right now for me. I remember my friends telling me that it is only fitting to say something about what’s different this year, and about the legacy I’ll be leaving with Xavier.

I’ll start with the first one. I think one thing really different with this year was all the risks that we took. There was the DC, the nighttime fair, the advocacy concert, the acquaintance interaction and many more. And even if these risks did not all perfectly work in our favor; I don’t regret anything that has happened this year. True, we could have done better in this and that, but as my friend told me, if we did things perfectly, the year may have been perfect, but people would not be who they are right now, because these challenges and hardships somehow molded us into who we are today: better individuals.

Now, with regards to the legacy that I’ll be leaving Xavier, I can’t say that it was an individual effort because it really is not. It’s a collaborative effort from the seniors right there. From the SC officers like Kevin Yu, Mark Gaw. The athletes like Martin Borbe, Joe Umali, Migo Palma-Gil. The musically inclined like Rafael Ting, Nino Sy, Marcel Marquez, to the ever-reliable, Sherwin Su, Laurence Go, Timothy Chua, Luis Locsin, Harroun Wong to name a few. I couldn’t name each and everyone of the seniors, but those 275 individuals will leave a legacy to you. Whether it’s the music, the sports, the service or the drive that they will leave you, it’s only fitting that you continue next year the legacy the seniors have left behind. Before I continue can you just give the seniors right there a round of applause as a sign of appreciation and good luck as we are about to take our final exams and finally graduate.

Today, you will have another miting de avance. I ask you to listen behind all those flowery words, and look into the sincerity, the intention, and the passion of your candidates. Whether it’s Leigh Wong or Carlo Roman who’ll win for president, I hope that you give him and the other candidates who will win the same support that you have given to me when I assumed my presidency. A leader can only be truly successful when the people have truly come to accept and support him. Don’t deny your next Student Council of this support.

Lastly before I end this speech, I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who helped out in the SC this year. I’d also like to thank everyone because you trusted me to be your SC president. This year was one of the hardest years for me. I got hospitalized because of over-stress, my grades slipped, I lost lots of sleeping hours, and I had to make a lot of sacrifices, but you know what, if given the chance, I’d still be you SC president and go through all these things all over again. It truly has been an honor to be your SC president. Thank you and may your light continue to shine.
