HIGHLIGHTS

The Blessing and Lighting of the First Candle
Matthew So (7G), Hoofprint Staffer

Posted Friday, 02-Dec-2005 10:46 AM

During the last general assembly last November 29, 2005, the Grade School community held the blessing of the advent wreaths of the different grade levels. The lighting of the first candle in the wreath symbolizes the start of the Advent season when we are expected to get ready for the coming of Jesus Christ. The advent wreath has many symbolisms. The round shape of the wreath helps us to remember that God is eternal, no beginning and no end and that he lives forever. It has green leaves because it shows that God’s love for us is constant and never changing. It is also the color of life and growth and we pray to God that He will guide us to grow in faith and love. Each of the four candles represents the four weeks of Advent. We light one of the three violet candles every week as a manifestation of our sorrow for not loving Jesus and our neighbors enough. On the last week, we light the pink candle to show our joy that Christmas is near. All the candles represent Christ, our light and our salvation. The lighting of the Advent wreath is a very popular Advent custom not only in Xavier School but also throughout the world and it tells us that we must prepare our hearts for the coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
