A Moderator’s Perspective: Joining a Club

Ms. Catherine Lauengco, Puppetry Club Moderator

The message was written on the pins given to all moderators: “Balance your life with Extra/Co-curricular Activities.” Who would believe that a lot of students would accept the message when on July 7 and 8, moderators were overwhelmed by the number of students asking to be accepted in their clubs.

A lot has been said about the advantages of joining a club but its significance to the boys only hit me when I witnessed the number of students in the MPC during ECA enlistment.   A lot of moderators and I were expecting a decrease in club enrollment due to the new policy which says that membership in clubs is now optional.  However, it was a surprise for even after I closed my Puppetry Club enlistment, there were still a number of students who asked to be included in my club.

What could be the reason for this interest?  Could it be that the students were forced to join because of the clause that says: "Students who are running for honors must be a member of a club?"  Was it possible that they were enticed by the club advertisements?

It would really be nice to think that all the students joined the clubs for the right reasons – that would be a moderator’s dream! However, I believe, all club moderators know that they may get some students whose heart is not in the club. Nevertheless, most moderators would want to believe also that these students would eventually like being in the club once they get the hang of it.

I don’t think this discovery is limited to my club alone. Each moderator was asked to prepare an array of activities to give to the students to ensure that members will be active participants. I think all moderators, in their hearts, believe that their club members joined because the club would offer exciting opportunities to learn more about their interests and to have an opportunity to meet people with the same interests as theirs.

And so our club school year begins on July 14 (for Grade 4) and July 15 (for Grades 5, 6 and 7). May this school year prove more exciting and just as fruitful as last school year.
