Men of Attitude, Dedication and Skill

“We are playing hurt…[they] are my unsung heroes!” was how Coach Albert Hao put the volleyball varsity team’s condition in the ongoing Filipino-Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation (FCAAF) Volleyball Tournament.

With two of their members restricted from playing and another two sustaining injury, the fifteen-man XS Team A was left with a big hole in their original setup. However, smart improvisations of the team gave them the win in the recently held semi-finals.

The key to their success? The coach would prescribe “attitude, dedication, and of course, skill!” Both Teams A and B train every Monday, Thursday and Friday from 4:00pm until 7:00 / 7:30pm. Coach Albert attests that they “consider each other as family; our main advantage against other teams is the bonding that we have.”

The members of the XS volleyball Team A are: Angelo Santos of H2B; Kyle Ong of H2D; Audren Wong of H2E; Andrew Sy of H2F; Henri Tan of H2H; Leonard Loo of H3A; Julio Inocencio, Mark Tan, and Jordan Tee of H3B; Mark Chan, Kirby Cheng and Christopher Gotianun of H3C; Sean Tiu of H4B; Jaime Leogardo and Richard Uy, team captain, of H4C.

On the other hand Team B consists of: Aaron Ng (G2B), Mark Chinlee and  Kevin Loo (G6B),Willian Ang (H1A), Nathan Ng (H1C), Mark Keng (H2E), Stefan Jao, Simon Manguiat and Benjamin Tiu (H2F).

Coach Albert Hao has been in Xavier for seven years, starting in the year 1997. He took a brief leave of absence in 2000 and came back 2002. His former coach at Chiang Kai Shek asked him to coach the Xavier team.

His assistant, Coach Kurt Chan, trains team B. He graduated high school from Chiang Kai Shek and finished culinary arts in college. He was a volleyball varsity Team member of his high school.

Coach Albert assures us, “I always remind them to sleep early if we have a game the following day.” He further adds, “They are unique and special because they care for and help each other; you don’t see this in boys’ volleyball. This is why I’m very proud of my team this year.”

Like their coaches, we are just as proud of our volleyball teams. Luceat Lux!
