“Luceat Lux, The Story of Xavier School ” Launched

Mr. Gary Garcia, Web Editor-In-Chief

Xavier School hosted a cocktail reception last Nov. 10 at the Multi-Purpose Center to launch the much awaited book, “Luceat Lux, The Story of Xavier School”. Written by Fr. Santos Mena after over ten years of painstaking research and interviews, the book is a highly readable account of the school’s early years (1956-1967), chronicling the major events and personalities that shaped Xavier’s first decade.

The affair also showcased the Xavier Golden Jubilee Wine, a special commemorative wine imported from Navarra , Spain . The wine, now available for sale, was served to the guests and generated excellent reviews and is currently generating a lot of sales interest. But the runaway bestseller that evening was Luceat Lux which sold briskly and had Fr. Mena signing autographed copies for most of the night.

The short program, hosted by Fred Tiu, Treasurer, began with an invocation by Fr. Ismael Zuloaga, followed by Hero Yu, Chair of the Jubilee Committee, who outlined the Jubilee activities in his opening remarks. Jose “Pepet” Jalandoni of Batch ’72 then gave a short description of the Jubilee wine before Fr. Mena took to the stage for a highlights presentation of “Luceat Lux”.

During his speech, Fr. Mena acknowledged the presence of the evening’s special guests, family members of some of the school’s early supporters: for Ambrose Chiu was wife Mrs. Pacita Chiu and son George Chiu (’79) and for Basilio King, daughter Sylvia Ti with husband Gilbert. He also presented copies of the book to them as well as to his other special guests, former faculty member Mrs. Luisa Relatado, book editor, Ambassador Bienvenido Tan, Jr., Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees and Fr. William Abbot, Assistant Provincial of the Philippine Jesuits.

The program was closed by Fr. Johnny Go , Director, who called on several key people on stage to join a toast given by Fr. Zuloaga. The evening was capped by the singing of the school song Luceat Lux. Over 130 guests attended the successful event, including several from the Jesuit community, notably Fr. Alberto Ampil, School Director from SY 1985-1991.
