It was a seemingly lacklustre start for Xavier School’s faculty and staff basketball team as it managed to drop its first few games in this year’s Faculty and Staff Athletics Association of Private Schools (FASAAPS ) basketball tournament. Added to that, the team lost some of its players to injury and busy schedules. The team was whittled down to six yet active and driven players rightfully coined the “Magic 6” by team coach and manager Mr. Rey Sabio of the Athletics Department.

Why continue on playing with such a small line up? Probably because we just “love this game” as team member Mr. Jimmy Go of the HS Chinese department would say.

Despite the slow start, the team was able to finish strongly by winning their last two games against Ateneo de Manila University and Lourdes School of Quezon City. These victories added to their win over Mirriam College .

Moreover, last November 18 at the Xavier High School Gym, the men’s team once again won over its counterparts from Lourdes School of Quezon City in a convincing fashion.

Players from both teams wasted no time in showing their scoring abilities. The first period ended at 19-16, in favor of XS thanks to back-to-back three-pointers of Mr. Jwyn Baculinao (APEX Department) who totalled 13 points. Eventually, the home team zoomed towards the end of the first half with eight of Jimmy Go’s 14 points to spoil LSQC’s bid to steal the lead. The half closed with the teams deadlocked at 34.

In the next two quarters, Xavier would seem to pull away but player #11 of Lourdes School kept the game interesting by scoring 15 points from beyond the arc. However, the outstanding performance of this Lourdes player did not keep the Xavier team from pumping up their game. Thus, in the end, it managed to complete the season with a 79-73 win.

Noteworthy were the performance of Mr. Emman Santos (HS Guidance) who poured in 28 points as he dominated the paint and the 24 points coming from the combined efforts of Mr Andrew Pinlac (HS Math), Mr. Mark Yap (HS Math) and Bro. Aldrie Lim, S.J. (HS CLE).
