ATHLETICS Stallion Keglers Defeat Ateneo Eagles Ms. Aimee Apolinario, Bowling Coach Posted Thursday, 24-Nov-2005 9:18 AM
It finally happened after two long years.
Last Saturday, November 19, 2005, the Xavier Bowling Team defeated Ateneo, 52 to 22 to take the 3rd Xavier-Loyola Cup held at the E-Lanes Bowling Center. The Xavier keglers started firing on all cylinders from the get go and they never relinquished the lead, giving them the right to keep the Xavier-Loyola Perpetual Cup for a period of one year.
The team started out hot in the first set, with J. Em Ang (H3D) defeating alumnus Kevin Chua (’05) 205 to 197, and the duo of Carl Lim (H1C) and Edmund Lee (H4D) winning the Scotch Doubles Event.
The second set featured a Xaverian shutout as the trio of Michael Olivan (H3B), Carl and Erick Tomaliwan (H1D) and the quartet of Edmund, J. Em, Francis Chung (H2G) and team captain Timothy Ocampo-Tan (H4B) scored impressive victories.
The third set saw more Xaverian victories as Maximillian Kho (H3A) scored a squeaker of a victory, 127 to 126, over another alumnus, T.J. Yusun (’05). Then, Xavier pulled away with a victory in the Baker’s match, as the team of Carl, Timothy, Edmund, J. Em and Joseph Potian (H1E) beat their Atenean counterparts.
In the fourth set, the pair of Michael and Carl won in the doubles event; setting the stage for the trios team of J. Em, Edmund and Timothy to seal the victory early. The trio did not disappoint as they scored on a lopsided win to give Xavier its first win in this tournament after two successive defeats. Meanwhile novice bowlers Kurt Yu (H1D) and Maxi played all out against former Xavier bowling team captains Casey Yu ('04) and Brian Chong ('04).
Everyone got on the winning act in the fifth set as the Baker’s team of Francis, Michael, Maxi, Timothy and grade schooler Markyn Kho (G6C) ended the day with another victory.
While this victory was a true showcase of the team’s bowling talent, coaches Sharwin Tee and Aimee Apolinario were more proud of the team’s show of unity than anything else. Coach Tee described it as one of his, “more satisfying victories.”
Last November 22, during the high school general assembly, the team was recognized by the community and the trophy was presented to the HS Principal.
The Xavier Bowling Team is now setting its sights on the 6th Burlington Bowling Marathon, as it has no plans of stopping now that it has tasted victory. The keglers are certainly looking forward to bringing more glory to the school.
