ATHLETICS Victorious Chess Teams Lester Erese (XS '05) and Jeffrey Go (H2C) Posted Thursday, 20-Oct-2005 11:44 AM
The 2005 edition of the PAYA (Philippine Athletics Youth Association) Chess Tournament concluded last September 24, 2005. The annual chess fest was held in Claret School in Quezon City, which attracted 5 teams to compete in the High School division: Xavier School, Ateneo, Southridge School, Colegio San Agustin, and host, Claret School.
The Xavier chess team members who participated were Jeffrey Go (H2C), the only member left from last year’s varsity team, Jason Tan( H3D), an alternate from last year’s training pool, Mark Sy (H1E), Trevor Chan (H1B), Marvin Yee (H2F), and Timothy Co (H3B). At present, these boys are under the tutelage of Mr. John Sy (XS ’83) and IM Idelfonso Datu.
Xavier School finished with 1 win, 2 draws and 1 loss, with an accumulated score of 8.5 points and bagged 3 rd place behind Southridge and Ateneo. Xavier defeated Colegio San Agustin 3-1, tied with Ateneo and Claret at 2-2 apiece, and lost to Southridge 2.5-1.5.
Furthermore, Jeffrey Go was awarded gold medal in his board assignment for the second straight year.
Meanwhile, in the Midgets Division, Xavier Grade School finished with an unblemished record of 4 wins and 1 draw with a total of 13 points and emerged the champion. Second and third place went to Claret and Ateneo respectively. The grade school squad is trained and coached by Mr. John Sy of the High School Math Department.
Both squads are now preparing for the CSA Chess Open which will be held sometime in October.
