XS Bowlers Pit Talents with AAXS's Best
Timothy Ocampo-Tan (H4B), Xavier Bowling Team Captain

Posted Wednesday, 19-Oct-2005 8:39 AM

The best bowlers of the Alumni Association of Xavier School Bowling Club (AAXSBC) overcame the youthful exuberance of the Xavier Varsity Bowling Team in the 1st AAXSBC Varsity-Alumni All Stars Challenge held at the Green Valley Bowling Center last October 1 and 2, 2005.

On the first day, Xavier faced the Alumni Blue Team, composed mostly of young alumni. Both the alumni and the varsity team showed guts and determination, wanting both the trophy and bragging rights. Alumni bowlers John Zamora and Kendrick Yu, former varsity players, were some of the key players that paved the way for their easy victory. Zamora spearheaded the alumni attack, playing well in each of the events that he played. Meanwhile, Kendrick Yu played an impressive singles game, narrowly defeating varsity captain Timothy Ocampo-Tan with a 205 to 201 comeback victory. The heartbreaking loss turned out to be the momentum breaker of the varsity’s attempted comeback.

On the second day, Xavier faced the Alumni Gold Team, composed mostly of older alumni. The Gold Team roster featured former national youth bowler Brian Chua, Ateneo de Manila’s bowling coach, Steward Uy and past AAXSBC Presidents Bonner Dytoc and George Buenconsejo, so this team was touted to be stronger than the Blue Team. Nevertheless, the varsity fought back with a vengeance, keeping the scores close until the very end. This made the alumni realize that the varsity team was not to be taken lightly. However, the Gold Team proved too much for the varsity boys, as they lost the last three events.

For the varsity team, the weekend was not a total loss. The competition was not only for bragging rights but also for a chance to get to know the alumni bowlers. Moreover, the varsity players, especially the Freshmen, gained valuable experience that would help them in future tournaments.

Moreover, at the close of the varsity-alumni meet, the AAXSBC generously provided sponsorship to the varsity team to help foot lodging costs in Cebu, where the young Xavier keglers competed in the 1st Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia Philippine-Taiwan Friendship Bowling Open.
