ATHLETICS Xavier Faculty Spikers Snatch First Win Ms. Aimee Apolinario, HS Web Editor Posted Thursday, 01-Sep-2005 8:35 AM
In the opening game of the Faculty and Staff Athletics Association of Philippine Schools (FASAAPS) women’s volleyball tournament, Xavier School faced the team from Don Bosco Mandaluyong last August 31, 2005 where the Xavier spikers walked away with a 25-22 victory at the end of the deciding set of the match. Missing the services of many of its players last year, Xavier started slow in the first set as it grappled with its defense and hesitated in its offense. Thus, the team ended up giving away the earliest set of the match to its opponent at 19-25. During the huddle before the second set began, Coach Mark Yap (HS Math) reminded his players to focus on their reception to enable rookie setter, Rachelle de Vera (Registrar’s Office), to set the ball, so that the spikers can execute an attack. The Xavier ladies responded to their coach by posing a convincing 25-7 win in the second set of the game. During the third set, Don Bosco Mandaluyong renewed its spirit and its defense, making the third set a tough and long for the Xavier team. However, with Xavier’s teamwork, coupled with its cheering squad on the sidelines, the team was able to sneak past its opponent and snatch away the victory. Meanwhile in the second game that evening, Don Bosco Makati routed its opponent Miriam College in two straight sets.
This year’s Xavier women’s volleyball team is composed of (in alphabetical order): Ms. Aimee Apolinario (HS Principal’s Office) Ms. Wynda Benito (HS Math) Ms. Joan Concepcion (HS Computer) Ms. Ruth Curato (Testing and Research) Ms. Rachelle de Vera (Registrar’s Office) Ms. Tess Elizalde (HS Principal’s Office) Ms. May Hernandez (HS Math) Ms. Bernadette Leobrera (HS Science) Ms. Jan Natonton (HS Social Science) Ms. Sarah Ocampo (HS Principal’s Office) Ms. Retzel Sanggalang (Testing and Research) Ms. Melanie Yao (HS Math).
