What nobler employment, or more valuable to the state,
than that of the man who instructs the rising generation.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero

Last September 23, 2005, a variety of activities were lined-up in celebration of Appreciation Day. Unlike most schools in the Philippines where this occasion is referred to as Teachers’ Day, Xavier has called it A-Day because its goal is to really make teachers feel that students recognize all the hard work, patience, and dedication they have poured into their profession.

In the Grade School, A-Day began with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist which was presided over by Fr. Art Borja, S.J. Then, a program organized by the Grade School Student Council was held at the Fr. Rafael Cortina Sports Center. In the said program, students displayed their talents as the Boys Choir and the Music Club rendered their musical numbers. Also, the Dance Club gave their share by exhibiting their groove to their teachers. After the program, the annual class parties were held in the Grades 4-7 classes. Not only did the classes host their own teachers, but they also invited special guests such as the Principal’s team and the EED and Grades 1-3 teachers.

Meanwhile, in the High School, a red carpet greeting for all teachers was prepared by the students. Cameras flashed left and right as each teacher walked the carpet laden workroom corridor. After that, the first three periods were devoted to the “Switch” Program, where students took on the roles of their teachers and administrators. This was followed by a short program ala Star Awards, which ended with the traditional giving of letters to teachers. To cap the affair, the HS Student Council treated the HS faculty and staff to a hearty lunch buffet held at the newly renovated Sacred Heart Garden, and to even make the teachers feel more special, the students themselves served food and drinks to their mentors.

In the afternoon, the teachers and staff were treated through an entertaining program dubbed as Xavier Duets INXS. Through the FACAMPA Chapters, several couples coming from the Grade School, High School and Central Administration units were scouted to compete for the title of Xavier’s best duet.

Winning in this singing contest were Ms. Karen Baylon (EED) and Mr. Harris Guevarra (HS Filipino), who were unanimously voted as the champions by both judges and audience. Runner-up couples were: Ms. Dolly Joya (HS Filipino) and Mr. Andrew Pinlac (HS Math), and Ms. Ma. Angela Estrellado (EED) and Mr. Isagni Marcorde (GS ODS).

Finally, the awarding ceremony was completed with Fr. Johnny Go, S.J. announcing the recipients of this year’s Director’s Choice, Mr. Christian Bumatayo (HS English) and Ms. Rachelle De Vera (Registrar’s Office), for their outstanding performance in their video presentation.
