ATHLETICS

Two for Two

The Xavier Faculty women’s volleyball team earned their second win out of two games last September 7, 2005. Facing the team from La Salle Greenhills (LSGH), the Xavier lady spikers disappointed their challengers with a 26-24 win in the third and deciding set of the match.

Led by team captain, Ms. Tess Elizalde of the High School Administrative Office, Xavier had an early advantage as it easily took charge of the first set as it beat LSGH, 25-16.

However, the ladies in green jersey seemed to have woken up from the first set trance as they strongly came back for the second set and stole it away from the Xavier ladies, 23-25.

Just before the start of the third set, Coach Mark Yap (HS Math) intensely reminded his players that they could not afford to let opportunities to attack just pass. Thus, they should be able to anticipate and receive the ball well.

The third set proved to be the most exciting part of the match as the scores seemed to sew saw all through out. Toward the end of the game, lady luck smiled on LSGH who tasted a three-point lead at 19-22. However, after a brief time out by Coach Yap, the ladies of blue and gold came back with more determination to win and forced the opponent to commit errors that brought the score to 22-22.

The heat of the game continued as the score was brought to 24-24. Eventually, the Xavier ladies put LSGH to a halt by scoring two straight points giving Xavier its second win in the Faculty and Staff Athletics Association of Private Schools (FASAAPS) women’s volleyball tournament.

Once again, determination, patience, hard work and moral support combined forces to sustain Xavier’s lady spikers in the game. Luceat Lux!
