Women's Volleyball Team

SPIKES Again!

The Xavier women’s volleyball team emerged victorious in their third game in the elimination round of the Faculty and Staff Athletics Association of Private Schools (FASAAPS) women’s volleyball tournament last September 14, 2005. Routing Don Bosco Makati in two straight sets, the Xavier lady spikers now hold the top spot with a 3-0 card.

During the first set, Don Bosco Makati had an early lead due to some errors from Xavier. This prompted Coach Mark Yap (HS Math) to call an early time out to remind his players that they seemed unfocused. Going back to the court, Xavier began to heat up and staged attacks that were left unanswered by the opposing team. In the middle of the game the opposing team fielded another spiker who managed to fish some points for their team. However, despite the seemingly sluggish start in the first set, Xavier managed to sustain the lead and take the set 25-23.

When the second set began, Xavier had an early lead that was easily taken away by Don Bosco. Nevertheless, the Xavier lady diggers dove and ran to receive and save the ball. Coupled with attacks coming from the blue and gold team, Xavier was able to gain the lead back. A few points before the end of the second set, Coach Yap called for a time out and instructed the ladies to stay in the game and finish the match in the second set. The Xavier six heeded the coach's instruction and they solidly finished the match, 25-20.

During the huddle after the game, Coach Yap said, “This is a good win.” He congratulated his team and reminded them that they can still put more intensity in the game. Thus, in spite of the lead in the league, the team finds no room to relax and be complacent. Training will continue as they aim for a respectable finish, at the very least.
