The 5th Xavier Match Play
Jonathan Yap (XS'94)

After dominating the first day of competitions in the 5 th Xavier Match Play Tournament held at the bucolic Canlubang Golf & Country Club last 9 & 16 January 2006 , the Stallions, captained by Lawrence Cobankiat (‘87) and Mike Chan (‘91) hurdled all obstacles in reclaiming their second title in three years. The powerhouse squad banked on the heroics of Class ‘87’s low handicappers JP Reyes , Mike Ozaeta and Ralph Tan in avenging their 2005 defeat to defending champions Dragons led by Robbie Anonas with a convincing 7-3 series win.     The all ‘72 Dragons and the composite Stallions (‘71, ‘87, ‘91, ‘92, ‘00) have somewhat developed an informal rivalry as they have been squaring off in the finals for the past three editions.

The 2 days of serious golf action was punctuated by the surprise decision of Colt 45 (formerly the jcgosj team) -- skippered by Bobby Go ‘79 -- to default all their matches in the last set of the elimination round against the Dragons. Because Colt 45 (‘78, ‘79, ‘83, ‘01) aspired for the championship and nothing else, they sprung this tactical maneuver on the assumption that they had a better chance of beating the Stallions on the shortened 9 hole semi-finals (thus enabling them to advance to the finals to face a supposed weaker opponent -- either Dragons or Tiger --) than on the full 18-hole championship series. However, the move backfired as Colt 45 ended up in 4 th place losing to 2003 champion Tigers, a merger of batches ‘74, ‘75, ‘76, ‘77, by a score of 3.5 to 6.5 in the consolation round.

CK (‘70, ‘73, ‘80, ‘81, ‘86) again failed to figure in the medal round despite the return of Samson Lim (‘81) , AAXS past president and Jeffrey Siy (‘80) , AAXS president to beef up Ruben Tan's (‘73) group.  Jeff and Sam's old Stanwood crew were the inaugural champions of the tournament.  The ageless Unicorns (‘61, ‘66, ‘67, ‘68, ‘69) of Miguel Alcazar Tan (‘66) made a valiant stand winning several key matches but couldn’t improve on last year’s 6 th place finish. The Unicorns are a team with strong potential as they were part of 2004 champion Stallions before the Stallions disbanded and combined with other years.

The Xavier Match Play tournament was patterned after the famous U.S. vs. Europe Ryder biennial competitions.  In the Xavier format, each team is composed of between 18 to 30 players with a maximum of 5 batches joining permitted.  A match consists of 9 holes where a victory earns a point (1.0) and ties half a point (0.5).

It was conceptualized as a fun way of giving back to the school through the Xavier School Educational and Trust Fund (XSETF). Philip Lu (‘72) served as Tournament Director, he was assisted by fellow Dragons Jun Suntay , Hero Yu and also by Lawrence Cobankiat . Special support were extended by XSPA president Ramon Go ('72) and AAXS President Jeffrey Siy . The 2007 tournament will be handled by Batch '75 who shall count on the expertise of 2000 Homecoming Chairman Dennis Huang , Tiger captain Johnson Tan and Xavier School Board of Trustees member Greg Yu.
