          Last Saturday and Sunday, January 28 and 29, the Xavier Tiong Lian Aspirants team defeated St. Jude Catholic School, 93-55, and UNO High School, 87-51, for their fifth and sixth victory. The team now holds a 6-0 record in the Aspirants Division of the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA). In the first game, Xavier had a 19-0 run to start the game. St. Jude tried valiantly to come back and erase the deficit to no avail. Xavier stretched the lead further and finally put the game out of their opponent’s reach going into the final quarter and went on to win by 38 points. Xavier started slow in the second game as they experimented with their man-to-man defense. The tempo, however, changed when Xavier decided to use its full court press instead. It caused easy baskets off fast break opportunities and gave them a comfortable lead going into the second half. Xavier continued to pull away in the late stages of the game and won by a comfortable 36 points. Xavier also defeated these two teams when they met in the first round. Xavier now has a chance to sweep the elimination round with just two more opponents left to play, Chiang Kai Shek College and St. Stephen’s High School. The Stallions now lead in the standings followed by St. Stephen’s whose only loss was to Xavier.
